Edited by Freya, VisiHow, Eng
You're watching VisiHow. In this tutorial, we're going to show you how to work with layers in GIMP in Windows 7.
Steps
1
You should have the program open and an image ready to use
.
You can refer to our other tutorials to find out exactly how to do that.
2
First, you can change the size of the "Toolbox" window so that you can see the top and bottom of the background window
.
"Layers" should be on the right-hand side. Layers can have transparency or priorities over other layers on the same canvas. In this video, there is only one layer on the canvas. You can find all of your layers shown in the layers panel on the right-hand side. There is also a small preview of the layer and its name.
3
To hide the layer, click its icon with the eye on the left-hand side
.
Hiding the layer will show the transparent background, which is indicated by a chequered pattern.
4
Click the eye again to make the layer reappear
.
5
Then, click "Create a new layer..." button at the bottom of the panel
.
The button looks like a piece of paper. You will start creating a new layer. It will go on top of the existing ones. A pop-up box will appear.
6
In the first box, manually enter a name for the layer
.
For this tutorial, it will be named "Test layer".
7
You can type the dimensions of the layer in "Width" and "Height"
.
8
We can tap on the drop-down menu to the right
.
9
Click the unit on the right-hand side
.
10
You can also change the "Layer Fill Type"
.
"Transparency" is the default setting. Let's click "White".
11
The layer is created on top of the other layers. You can keep adding layers.
12
If you were to use the eraser, on the top layer, then the bottom layer would be revealed
.
13
If you want to remove the layer, click the layer
.
It will turn blue.
14
Then, just click and drag it onto the "Delete this layer" bin in the right corner of the panel
.
15
You can also delete layer groups by clicking the second icon at the bottom
.
16
You can move layers above or below other layers by using the green arrows at the bottom of the panel
.
The up arrow moves the layer to front. The down arrow sends the layer to back.
