   First we need to locate the Power button

   .

   This button is located at the bottom of our device, to the right of the USB charging port. For the rest of this tutorial, we will be referring to this button as the "Power button". However, we will describe how long and when we should press it.

   If you look on the front of the Kindle, you will note where it says "Kindle" directly under the "E" on the bottom is the power button

   So at times we will refer to this area as the power button.

   To get started, we will give one quick press to the Power button

   This will bring up the option to swipe to unlock the Kindle.

   We will then swipe to the right, this will unlock our Kindle

   In order to power off the device, we are going to press and hold the Power button

   Once again, this button is located at the bottom of the Kindle. We are going to press and hold the power button for approximately 5 to 7 seconds.

   A menu will now appear on the screen, presenting us with three Power options

   These options are 'Cancel', 'Restart', and 'Screen Off'.

   We will press on the option labeled 'Screen Off' to turn off our Kindle Paperwhite

   The screen will now turn off

   The screen may appear to be still lite up, but this is simply the way a Kindle Paperwhite screen looks when it is turned off. As a general rule, the device only uses power when we are using it to perform a function. Such as turning a page or downloading an eBook. However, this is technically not Off as far as other devices are concerned. It is not technically possible to turn a Kindle Paperwhite completely off.    To turn our Kindle Paperwhite back on, simply give a single press to the Power button

   The device will immediately come back on.

    If we would like to put the device in Sleep Mode instead, give a quick press to the Power Button

    .

    In this mode, the device will use very little battery, close to nothing. It is also advised by Amazon that we put our device into Sleep Mode instead of turning it Off. The device can easily last up to the three weeks while in Sleep Mode, possibly up to a month. This all depends on how often we read, and what we do with the device.

    As discussed earlier, to access the device again simply give a single press to the Power button

How do I turn my Kindle Paperwhite off in order to reset the device?

My touchscreen and downloads are not working properly. I just talked with Amazon support and was told to be sure my battery is charged, unplug my Kindle, hold down the Power button for 40 seconds to turn my device off, leave it off for at least 20 minutes and then turn it on again to reset the system. Holding the power button for 40 seconds simply restarts the Kindle rather than turning it off.

My kindle will not turn off and keeps flashing on the screen and I have tried the 7 second and the 40 second restart but did not work?

My kindle paper white will not turn off and is keeps flashing. I tried everything. Keeps going dead. Well I didn't see anything that would help me figure out what to do to fix it. I have tried: I have tried the restart with the 7 seconds and to restart with the 40 seconds. I think it was caused by: I have no idea. It was fine then it just froze up and I couldn't get it to shut off.
