Transfer Files from Samsung Galaxy S4 to PC and Vice Versa

There will be times where you will need to move files from your Samsung Galaxy S4 to your PC or from your PC to your Samsung Galaxy S4. Most common reasons are because of uploading pictures and files to the internet using the PC (when Samsung Galaxy S4 has no internet connection), backing up files from your Samsung Galaxy S4, copying movies and audio from PC to phone or vice versa and others.
Supported Formats
Depending on the versions of both devices, and the applications installed on them, some applications may nor may not be supported by one or both of the devices. The following file types are normally supported by both devices.
- 1mp3, m4a, mp4, 3gp, 3ga, wma, ogg, oga, aac, and flacMusic files on the following formats:
- 2bmp, gif, jpg, and pngImage files on the following formats:
- 33gp, mp4, avi, wmv, flv, and mkvVideo files on the following formats:
- 4doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx, pdf, and txtDocument files on the following formats:
Points to take note
- Some unsupported formats may be opened by a device by downloading an application that enables the device to properly recognize the file. For example, other video formats may be supported on your Samsung Galaxy S4 by downloading MX Player and QQ Player.
- Even if a file is unsupported, it may still be transferred from one device to another.
- File transfer duration is directly proportional to the file size, larger files will take longer time to transfer than the smaller files.
- USB port version will also affect transfer rate as newer USB versions have a faster transfer rates than the older ones.
Transfer Files Using Samsung Kies
Samsung Kies is a computer application that allows you to manage, transfer, update and sync media libraries, contacts, calendars to any supported Samsung device. You may download the latest Samsung Kies from the official Samsung website.
- 1Download Samsung Kies.
- 2Install the application upon completion of download.
- 3Connect your Samsung Galaxy S4 to the USB port of the computer via USB cable.
- 4If it does not open automatically, manually launch the program by double clicking the Samsung Kies icon on your computer.Wait for Samsung Kies to automaticaly launch.
- 5You can now transfer files from and to your computer.
Connect with Windows Media Player
You can also sync your Samsung Galaxy S4 with the Windows Multi-Media Player to sync music files from and to your phone.
- 1Make sure that Windows Media Player is installed on your computer.
- 2If there is no installed Windows Media Player yet, download the file from Microsoft's offical website.
- 3Connect your Samsung Galaxy S4 to the USB port of the computer via USB cable.
- 4Wait for your PC to detect your phone.
- 5Open Windows Media Player and start syncing the music files.
Connect to the Computer as a Media Device
You can use your phone as a media device or a storage device to transfer files from your Samsung Galaxy S4 to your PC and vice versa. Follow the steps below to do it:
- 1Connect your Samsung Galaxy S4 to the USB port of the computer via USB cable.
- 2Wait for your PC to detect your phone.
- 3Drag the notifications panel down to open it.
- 4Tap on Connected as a media device → Media device (MTP).
- 5Older computer does not support Media Transfer Protocol (MTP), if it is not supported or you do not have the appropriate drivers installed, Tap Camera (PTP).
- 6Go to My Computer.
- 7Look for the Camera PTP or Media PTP icon in the usual place where you find the icon for the USB storage devices connected to your PC.
- 8Camera PTP or Media PTP acts like a normal USB storage device so you can transfer files between your Samsung Galaxy S4 and the computer.
Connect Using Airdroid
You can transfer files between your computer and your Samsung Galaxy S4 wirelessly by using an application called Airdroid. Airdroid allows you to wirelessly transfer files between your two devices by using the Wi-Fi network.
- 1Download and install Airdroid on your Samsung Galaxy S4.
- 2After installation, open the application.
- 3Once opened, the application will show the IP address for connection.
- 4192.168.1.2.3:8888Go to you computer's web browser and type the address in the format:
- 5If an authentication code is required, enter the authentication code shown on the phone.
- 6You will be taken to the phone's interface on your computer's web browser.
- 7Go to the gallery folder and trasfer desired files between the two devices.
Points to note
- If your PC will not detect the phone, try to use another USB port or check the USB cable if it is functioning well.
- Make sure to perform a safety removal procedure before pulling out your phone from your computer.
- Make sure that your computer and your phone is free from viruses in order not to spread any unwanted file between both devices.
- Do not remove the phone from your PC while transfer is on going as it may corrupt files on both devices.
- Other applications may be used in doing the file transfer. Notable applications include June Fabric's PDANet (USB transfer).
