How to clear a cracked voice within an hour of performance?
Depending on the level of damage to your throat, you may not be able to clear it within an hour. Take an Ibuprofen based pain killer like Advil or Motrin. Not to kill the pain, but rather to reduce the swelling. Many people are not aware that Ibuprofen will bring swelling down (and fevers too) which will allow your voice to operate as it was before it was damaged. If your throat is irritated and itchy, try to use something like honey and water to soothe it. Also, you can try something like pineapple juice to clear the excess mucus buildup. Just stay hydrated and try not to overdo it before the performance, and just do some light warm-up exercises. Don't do anything too intense that could damage your throat, but remember the best thing for a damaged throat or cracked voice is time and rest.
IMPORTANT: Just because your throat stops hurting during your performance do NOT assume it is all healed up. Do not use your voice too aggressively. Baby it as much as you can during the performance. The Ibuprofen has temporarily made your voice usable and has reduced or illuminated the pain. Do not be fooled into thinking you can go for that hard to reach note. You could do irreparable damage.
What can I use to clear my throat naturally as a chorister so as to have a clearer voice?
As a chorister, you are frequently using your voice to sing in different vocal ranges and increases the risk of damaging your vocal cords. Physical trauma to your vocal cords mostly caused by vocal abuse commonly results to hoarseness of voice. Here are some tips to help you clear your throat naturally as a chorister:
- Voice Rest. The usual way to rest a voice in a vocal cord damage caused by vocal abuse is about three to four days, but since you are a chorister, I suggest for you to have a complete voice rest for 5 to 6 hours daily which means you need to avoid using your voice to ease the inflammation of your vocal cord helping you to clear your voice.
- Honey and Ginger Tea. Honey has been widely used for its various health benefits especially on voice because of its natural anti-bacterial properties and helps in soothing the inflamed vocal folds. Ginger also has an anti-inflammatory effect which helps in reducing the swelling of your throat. To use, simply mix 1 tablespoon of honey and ginger powder in a warm cup of water and slowly sip.
- Steam Inhalation. Steam inhalation is also one of the best natural ways in clearing your throat. Simply boil a clean water and pour it into a basin. Add a few drops of peppermint oil or a eucalyptus oil and deeply inhale the steam for 5 minutes. The steam helps in moisturizing the vocal folds reducing the inflammation and it helps to liquefy mucus secretions which efficiently helps in clearing your throat.
