If you are using an iPhone and you share the same Apple ID, you can actually see the iMessages and Facetime calls on both device.  However, you would not be able to see regular text messages and regular phone calls.  Also, you would not be able to see the actual Facetime video but at least you would see which number or person the video was made with.

If you're not using the same Apple ID, this is quite difficult to do as most smartphones these days really protect the privacy of the owner.
