Hello, and thank you for watching VisiHow. Today, we have a hospitality English course on giving directions. If you're working in a hotel as a concierge or as a receptionist, or even a bellman or a doorman, you may be asked to provide a guest with some directions. First, we will start with some of the phrases that you may need to use in order to give the best directions. Afterwards, we will explain giving some directions by example that we have included in a map on the bottom right-hand side of the whiteboard.

When giving directions to a guest, what should you do?
How should you give directions to a guest in a clear way to make guest understand correctly
Following the instructions from this video tutorial should be a very clear way to orient the guest. The majority of guests will understand it correctly. However, in rare cases when the guest is still lost, you may need to assist him or her with gestures and maps to help the guest orient himself or herself around the area.
First of all, some people are not good with discerning left and right sides; so, you may want to stand near them, facing the same direction, and showing left and right with your hands.
For people who are not good with understanding foreign languages, you need to have a map ready. You can also draw it by hand. Just point and say: "You are here". Then, point to the destination.
If the location is not too far away, go outside with the guest and point at the location. This is extremely useful in the early morning when a guest has to find a bus, tram, or trolley-bus stop where the public transport goes in the right direction.
