Connect Samsung Galaxy S4 to a Wi-FI Network

Some of your phone's application requires a working internet connection to be able to function or open. This includes browsers, instant messaging apps, video streaming apps, file downloading apps and others. Internet connection is also required when you download applications from the Play Store or update your applications and phone.

There are two types of internet sources using your Samsung Galaxy S4; the network data service and the Wi-Fi network. This Howiki will discuss more on connecting to a Wi-Fi network.

Turn Wi-Fi On and Off

To be able to use a Wi-Fi network's connection, you need to connect to it by first turning on your phone's Wi-Fi radio. To turn on or off this feature follow the steps below:

Turn Wi-Fi On and Off Using the Notifications Panel

    Open the notifications panel by doing a dragging gesture from the top most of the screen to the lower portion of it.

Join Wi-Fi Networks

You need to join to an available Wi-Fi network in order to enjoy the network's internet connection. Some networks maybe open and free to use while others require a password. If the case is the latter, you need to know the network's Wi-Fi password in order to have access to it. To join a Wi-Fi network, follow the steps below:

    Wait for your phone to detect available Wi-FI network names.

    A Wi-Fi network name with a lock icon on it means that it is password protected. You need to enter the network password in order to access it.

Things to note

  • If there is only one Wi-Fi network available, your phone will automatically connect to the available one.
  • If there are more than one Wi-Fi networks available, you phone will automatically connect to the network that you already connected with before.
  • If there are more than one Wi-Fi networks available and you have connected to before to those networks, you need to manually choose what network you would like to connect to.
  • If you have already connected to a password connected network, your phone will automatically connect to it assuming that the password has not been changed. If it has, you need to re-enter the new password again.

Add Wi-Fi Networks

Some Wi-Fi networks may have been set so you cannot find it by merely scanning available networks. Some require that you know the Network SSID and the password. If you are sure that you are within the range of a Wi-Fi network and you know it's SSID and password, you can connect to it by following the steps below:

    Your phone should detect available networks and won't be able to find the desired network.

    Go over the bottom of the available network list and tap on Add Wi-Fi network.

    Enter the network name in the Network SSID.

Forget Wi-Fi Networks

If your phone is already messed with a lot of previously connected Wi-Fi networks and you want to clean it up, or want to delete a Wi-Fi network for privacy purposes, you can forget a certain Wi-Fi network by following the steps below.

    On the Settings Menu, tap on the Connections Sub Menu.

    Wait for your phone to display a list of all Wi-Fi networks that you had previously connected to.

    The Wi-Fi network should be deleted by now and will not appear on the network list.

Things to note

  • Once a Wi-Fi network has been deleted from your phone, you cannot auto-connect to it once you turn on the Wi-Fi. You need to go to the process again of joining or adding the Wi-Fi network.
  • If you cannot access a password protected Wi-Fi network that you had previously to, the password may have been changed. Re-enter the new password again by forgetting the Wi-Fi network and joining or adding it again.
