You're watching VisiHow. In this tutorial, we're going to show you how you can apply a sketch effect to an image in Adobe Illustrator CS6 in Windows 7.
Steps
1
To begin, we should have Illustrator and document opened
.
In this video, a photograph has been imported. However, we can use a digital or even scanned image as well.
2
No matter what you are using, click the "Selection Tool" black arrow
.
The arrow is at the top-left side of the toolbar.
3
Then, click the image with which you are working
.
A blue rectangle will appear. It basically means that your image is selected. When the image is selected, you can start to edit it.
4
Find "Photoshop Effects". It is useful to have these effects in both Photoshop and Illustrator, as it saves you time by not making you use two different programs.
5
Move the cursor to "Sketch"
.
There will be different menu options. The names are self-explanatory. It is recommended to become familiar with them and experiment.
6
Let's click "Chalk & Charcoal...", for example
.
You can go through other options as well. A large dialogue box will appear with a preview on the left side will appear.
7
Click the minus and plus icons in the bottom-left corner to zoom the preview in and zoom it out
.
8
Alternatively, click the arrow to the right of the minus and plus icons
.
9
Click a percentage from the menu
.
10
You can click and drag the preview image to move it
.
11
You can click a "Sketch" effect in this dialogue box as well
.
The effects are the same as the ones in the "Effects" menu. Depending upon the effect, the changeable settings on the right-hand side will be different.
12
Let's change "Charcoal Area" and "Chalk Area"
.
These change darker and lighter parts of the image.
13
You can also change "Stroke Pressure"
.
14
Let's click "Graphical Pen"
.
15
Let's click "Halftone Pattern"
.
This is useful for creating a screen-printing document.
16
17
Let's click "Water Paper"
.
18
Let's click "Chalk & Charcoal" again
.
19
Let's click "Conté Crayon"
.
20
Let's click "Note Paper"
.
21
Let's click "Torn Edges"
.
22
You may want to manipulate different settings on the right-hand side.
23
Let's click "Reticulation"
.
24
Let's click "Water Paper" again
.
25
For the options, you can click the input boxes and type numbers
.
26
Simply click "OK" to apply your settings
.
The "OK" button is located in the upper-right corner of the window.
