You're watching VisiHow. This tutorial will show you how to apply the "Pixelate" effect to an image in Adobe Illustrator CS6 in Windows 7.
Steps
1
In this video, Illustrator and a document have been opened
.
A photograph is used, but you can use digital or even scanned drawings. Either way, try to use high-quality images.
2
Click the black arrow at the top-left side of your toolbar to select your object
.
The black arrow is "Selection Tool".
3
Click the object that you want to edit
.
A thin blue frame and corners will appear, which means your object is selected and ready for editing.
4
Click "Effect" at the top of the window
.
5
Within the "Photoshop Effects" section, move the cursor to "Pixelate"
.
A menu will appear where you can click the effect you prefer: "Color Halftone...", "Crystallize...", "Mezzotint...", and "Pointillize..." These are all Photoshop effects.
6
First, we click "Color Halftone"
.
A small dialogue box will appear. "Color Halftone" is useful for creating a dot pattern. Otherwise, it's used for creating images ready for screen printing.
7
You can click and drag the dialogue box to move it away from your canvas
.
For this effect, a preview is not available.
8
You can change the details by simply typing within the "Channel" boxes
.
It is highly recommended to leave them as they are unless you are more advanced with Illustrator.
9
You change the "Max Radius" if you like
.
10
Then, when you're satisfied with the changes, click "OK" to apply your settings
.
11
You can see that there is the half-tone pattern made from the used image.
12
Press "Ctrl" and "Z" to undo the effect
.
13
Next, click "Crystallize..." in "Pixelate" under "Effect"
.
The effect makes your image look as if it's made from crystal. A small dialogue box will appear.
14
You can zoom in and out of the preview by using the plus and minus in the corner
.
Otherwise, click the percentage drop-down menu next to the plus and minus icons.
15
You can click and drag the preview to move around it
.
Alternatively, just use the scrollers.
16
For this effect, you can only adjust "Cell Size"
.
You can do it by clicking and dragging the scroller or by manually typing a number in the box on the right. The preview will be updated.
17
You can click "OK" to apply any changes
.
18
Press "Ctrl" and "Z" to undo the effect
.
19
Next, click "Mezzotint..." in "Pixelate" under "Effect"
.
The "Mezzotint" effect is reminiscent of old television without signal.
20
Again, a small dialogue box will appear
.
You can navigate it in the same way as before, except you have a drop-down menu where you can choose various dots, strokes, and lines this time.
21
Click one of the "Type" selections and click "OK"
.
22
Finally, click "Pointillize..." in "Pixelate" under "Effect"
.
This effect is painterly, and it's made out of dots.
23
You can navigate and change "Cell Size" as you like
.
