Write a Recommendation Letter
Edited by Hotelier, Amanda, Eng
Hello, and thank you for watching VisiHow. In today's tutorial, I'll show you how you can prepare and write a recommendation letter. If you are asked to recommend someone for a specific job or for an event, we will teach you how to do that correctly and effectively.
Steps
1
At the top of the letter, include the recipient's address and name
.
2
The next line is a reference line
.
A reference line can be abbreviated below the address as "Re:". Then write, "Recommendation for". Next, include the position that the recommendation is for. This might be a specific job or a task or an event.
3
Open the body of the letter with our relationship to the person being recommended
.
Include job titles, company names, and length of the relationship. This is our opening paragraph.
4
Note the person's knowledge, skills, and abilities
.
It does help to have some background information about the position. If this is a particular job, what knowledge, skills, and abilities are required to do the job? Write the letter in such a way that the knowledge, skills, and abilities that we highlight meet the needs of the employer.
5
Include specific examples
.
Use examples of when the person we're recommending demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities that we've highlighted.
6
Keep the recommendation letter not much longer than one page, maximum
.
This is so that it is easy for the recipient to read. They very well may have many letters that they will be receiving. We want ours to be short, to the point, and applicable, so that it meets the needs of the employer.
7
Close with a positive statement of support
.
For example, "I know that John will be an asset to your organization."
8
At the end, include contact information
.
This can include phone and email. Add a note that we would be happy to discuss any of these points in further detail if required.
9
Sign off with a closing statement
.
For example, we can use "Best Regards," or "Sincerely,". Follow that with our name and signature.
10
This concludes today's tutorial on how to write a recommendation letter
.
