Today we are going to teach you how to wash your hands like a doctor. The reason we are going to teach you to wash your hands like a doctor is because dirty hands have bacteria. Bacteria sits in these lines that run across and down your hands. Bacteria can sit in between your fingers or under your fingernails if your nails are not properly cared for. We do have another video about taking care of your fingernails which you can follow by clicking the link. At any rate, these are all areas of your hands that can be very dirty. They trap bacteria. They hold any dirt or any oil that gets in there, and your fingers and hands are naturally oily anyway, so they attract dirt and that is why you always want to wash them.

   So, first things first, the temperature of your water should not be too hot

   You want to make sure your water is not too hot, because when water is too hot it will take away the oil on your hands. Once that oil on your hands is gone, you will end up with dry skin. I don't know if you can see it but I have dry skin.

   Let's get the water turned on

   Now what we are going to do is take one squirt of dish soap

   Just one squirt is all you need. I am using Palmolive. If you're using something like Dawn Dish Detergent, something more concentrated, then you will want to use less. Make sure my sleeves are up.

   What we are going to do is get the soap rubbed around our hands

   Rub it up on our wrist a little bit too.

   Once the soap is around everywhere, we are going to take our fingers see how it forms almost a star shape

   We are going rub that nice and hard on there in a circular motion, and a little back-and-forth, side-to-side, just rub that all around and get all the dirt out of there

   Rub it up your fingers as well

   We are going to switch to the softer sides of our hands, still pressing hard

   The reason we are not going to use nails on the back is because if you scratch this top part of your hand up, it is softer and you can get an infection in there and we don't want an infection.

   So let's get this hand here as well and scrub that up

   Another thing this does is it also forces the soap up under your fingers nails that's going to make sure your fingernails are nice and clean. Which I have to add a little more water here to make sure my hands are wet enough. That's why we say that this is how doctors wash their hands, because doctors do, doctors need to have particularly clean hands not just for the patients but also for themselves, because they deal with a lot of sick people.

    Now we are washing up on our wrists a little bit

    Why are we washing our wrists? Because sometimes your wrists is an area that also gets dirty. It's easy to wipe your face with your wrist then bump into that and get sick.

    When you're washing your hands, if you are wondering how long it should be done, sing the happy birthday song two times

    It's about 20 or 30 seconds, and that's plenty of time. Obviously, you might freak-out your coworkers or friends if you sing it out loud so sing in your head. But it's a general rule to make sure your hands are clean. If you haven't done much during the day, then you don't have to go through all the steps that I did, but you do want to do that at least several times a day. So, that is washing your hands.
