Use Text with the Text Tool in the GIMP Program
Edited by Freya, VisiHow, Eng
You're watching VisiHow. In this tutorial I'm going to show you how to manage text with "Text Tool" in GIMP in Windows 7.
You should have GIMP and a document opened. If "Toolbox" is blocking the menu, just move it by dragging it by the border.
To open a document, go to "File" at the top left-hand corner of the screen.
Then, click "New..." from the menu. You can also press "Ctrl" + "N" on the keyboard.
Now, select your document settings. For more information on this step, please view our other GIMP tutorials. Click "OK" when you are ready to proceed.
With a document ready, double-click "Text Tool" in "Toolbox". This icon looks like a capital "A". This will change the cursor into an "I"-shaped symbol.
Click on the canvas. A text box will appear. You can begin to type. If you look into the "Tool Options" window, then you will see that there are different settings that you can change. These settings can also be changed in the pop-up window that appears when you click the canvas to begin typing.
In "Tool Options", you can change the "Size" value. You can do it by using the arrows to the right or by manually typing a number into the "Size" text box. This will change the font size.
You can check and uncheck "Use editor" and "Antialiasing".
You can select a unit of measurement for the text size by clicking the drop-down menu to the right of "Size".
Proceed to edit your text settings according to your preferences. Editing options include "Hinting", "Color", "Justify", and "Language". Finally, click the text box on the canvas to begin typing. Type text.
Triple-click the text area. This will select the whole text for editing. You can change the text size, font, color, and type. If you are interested, there is another VisiHow tutorial on how to write text in an arc or along a path.
This is a VisiHow tutorial, and we've just shown you how to manage text with "Text Tool" in GIMP in Windows 7. If you have any questions or comments regarding this tutorial or the program used, just add them to the section below. Thank you for choosing VisiHow!
