Unlock a Photoshop CS6 Layer

Edited by Freya, Amanda, Eng

You're watching VisiHow. In this video, I'm going to show you how you can unlock a layer in Photoshop CS6 in Windows 7. To begin, you should already have a document open. Either open an old document or create a new document. We've shown you how to do this in other tutorials. You can see I have a document here with a layer on top of a background layer. The top layer, our photograph, is easy to move around because it's not locked. There's no padlock icon on the right-hand side of the layer tab.

Steps

  1. 1
Note that the background layer is locked
    .
This is generally to help us when we're making something. It keeps the background still while we're working. There is a padlock icon on the tab for the layer to indicate that it is locked.

Look at the background layer's tab
    .
There's no padlock there anymore. Our background layer is now called "Layer 0". We're free now to use our background layer in the same way as we have with every other layer.
