Train Windows 8.1 Speech Recognition to Understand You Better

Edited by Colette Cole, priya, Eng, Inukshuk

Hello and welcome to VisiHow. In this video, we will demonstrate how we can take the speech recognition application a little further and train it how to understand us. Now, it seems kind of odd that we're training a computer to understand us, but the principle is very similar to training children or an animal to understand how we say different things, except that we're dealing with a program here. Everyone has a different accent, or a different way of saying something. For example, someone with a Canadian accent from Central Canada may say something differently from somebody perhaps from the United States in the southern areas or in the north area, depending on where they are. It is better that we get our computer used to how we say things, then it will basically remember the way we say things. This makes our dictation a lot simpler.

Steps

  1. 1
First, we're going to access the options for speech recognition
    .
The easiest way to do that is to go into the Windows search function via the right side menu bar. The operating system we're using in this demonstration is Windows 8.1.

In the Search box, type the word "speech"

Both "Windows Speech Recognition" and "Speech Recognition" will come up. "Speech Recognition" is the one we want to use because it is actually the setup mode.

    .
Then choose "Speech Recognition". It's just simpler to go in through the search function.

If we're not feeling comfortable with the level the computer has learned the sound of our voice and the way we say things, we'll simply click on the gray button that says "More Training"
    .
This will put more sentences on screen for us to read, and it will give the computer more practice in learning the sound of our voice.
