Stop Biting Nails with Nail Polish and Care

Edited by Hotelier, Amanda, Eng

Hello, and thank you for watching VisiHow. In today's tutorial, I will be showing you one way that you can take care of your hands on a daily basis in order for you to hopefully stop biting your fingernails. If you're like me, and you've been a lifelong nail biter, you've probably constantly been looking for ways to stop. Yet many of the traditional techniques, such as a rubber band around the wrist, telling friends and family, and even the horrible-tasting fingernail polish don't seem to work. What has worked for me is a daily application of lotion and then a periodic manicure. I use cuticle oil, nail hardener, and a color, preferably a bright color.

Steps

  1. 1
To begin, squeeze a small bit of lotion into the hands

  2. 2
    Massage the hands together
    .
Make sure to apply lotion especially to the finger area, including the fingernails. We have very, very dry skin, so frequent applications of lotion are completely necessary. It's also a great opportunity to give ourselves a nice little hand massage. Once we have finished, we can move on to our nails.

  3. 3
    Allow the lotion to dry
    .
If using lotion specifically formulated for the hands, this shouldn't take long. While waiting, get the cuticle oil. Ours is from Flormar.

    Brush along the cuticle line
    .
This is the area along the bottom of the nail (or the top of the nail bed) where the nail and the skin connect.

Allow the oil to soak in and then pat the area dry
    .
We will do this immediately for this tutorial to save a little bit of time. Here, we are using a cotton disc pad. Typically, we do allow a bit of time to let the oil completely soak in. The nail hardener and the nail polish will not apply correctly if we have oil sitting on the fingernails.

  11. 11
    Apply it to each fingernail
    .
Brush from the nail bed to the tip. We have weak fingernails, so as we grow them out, we want them to be strong.

  12. 12
Allow the nail hardener to dry
    .
This will take a few minutes. Once it is dry, we will apply a coat of nail polish. Even though our nails are short, we are usually keeping a bright color on them. This reminds us not to bite them. I'm also doing them often to avoid them becoming chipped.

  13. 13
Remove the lid from the nail polish color
    .
Wipe off excess nail polish by rubbing the brush against the inside lip of the lid. We want enough color to deposit a thin coat, but not so much that it will drip off or over-coat the nail.

    Begin applying the color
    .
Again, paint from the nail bed to the nail tip.

    Repeat for each fingernail
    .
Change the angle of the fingers or the whole hand as needed to make it easier to cover each surface entirely.

When finished, use the cotton disc to wipe the skin around each fingernail clean
    .
This helps us clean up any areas where we may have made a mistake. Since our nails are short, this is a common occurrence.

Wait a few minutes for the nail polish to dry
    .
We don't want to chip or dent it.

This concludes today's tutorial on how you can take care of your hands on a very frequent basis to hopefully stop biting your nails
    .
The key is to keep your hands and the nail area moisturized and nicely manicured, so that you can avoid picking at or biting your fingernail area. Allow the fingernails to grow out little by little. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please leave them in the space below.
