Setup a Samsung Galaxy Gear S2 Watch with No Phone

If you have a Samsung Galaxy Gear S2 that you would like to use without ever connecting it to a smart phone, which is known as standalone mode, you can. It's actually a fairly easy process to set up. There are some catches though, one of which is that you will only be using default applications and watch faces. That means there will be no connectivity to the Gear store, where you would be able to purchase apps. You'll also lose access to some of the other features which are native and allow you to connect to other devices, such as a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. Finally, if the watch language is something other than English, you'll need to have an authorized repair shop update the device language or flash the watch yourself with the correct language version.
With that in mind, it is relatively easy to set up your Samsung Gear S2 as a standalone watch. To learn how to do this, please follow the steps in the tutorial below.
Setup a Galaxy Gear S2 in Standalone Mode
- 1If you are are not aware of the steps involved in hard resetting your Gear S2, please follow this link to hard reset your Gear S2.The first thing you will need to do is hard reset your Galaxy Gear S2.
- 2Note that if you have purchased your Gear S2 in a country other than the one you live in or someone else has brought it or shipped it to you, your language may not be in English. This is not a problem. Simply follow the steps here, and you'll be able set up the watch, no matter the language. Just keep in mind that you can't change the root language unless you flash the watch OS or connect to a smartphone and update it with the Gear Manager, which we show you how to do in our tutorial on changing the language of a Gear S2 watch.Once the hard-reset process has been completed, you will see a screen indicating your Gear S2 model and providing information in the root language of the device.
