You're watching VisiHow. In this tutorial, we're going to show you how to save files in Adobe Illustrator CS6 in Windows 7.
Steps
1
To begin, you should open illustrator either from your desktop or by coming down to the bottom-left corner and clicking the Windows icon
.
This will reveal a list of your recently used programs. You may find Illustrator there. It has a brown-and-orange icon with the letters "Ai".
2
If you still can't see "Adobe Illustrator CS6", use the search bar along the bottom and start typing "Adobe Illustrator"
.
3
Click "Adobe Illustrator CS6"
.
Adobe Illustrator CS6 will immediately start loading and will take you directly to your workspace.
4
Now, create a new document by clicking "File" in the top left-hand corner
.
5
Alternatively, press "Ctrl" + "N" on the keyboard. You can also open an existing document from the menu. There are other VisiHow tutorials on how to create and open documents and on how to set up a new document.
6
7
In this video, a shape is created by clicking the "Star Tool"
.
There is another video on how to do that.
8
When you have your document ready to save, click "File" in the top-left corner
.
9
Click either "Save As..." or "Save a Copy"
.
Alternatively, we can press "Shift" + "Ctrl" + "S" or "Alt" + "Ctrl" + "S". Clicking just "Save" will just overwrite the document; therefore, be careful with that.
10
Choose the location to where you would like to save your file
.
11
You can choose a name for the file
.
In this video, it is named "Star".
12
Click the "Save as type" drop-down menu
.
Then you can click one of the file formats below.
- "Adobe Illustrator (*.AI)" to save as the format that allows you to save multiple artboards and to open the document in other versions of Illustrator.
- "Illustrator EPS (*.EPS)" is best for saving combined vector and bitmap images, as well as multiple artboards.
- "SVG (*.SVG)" and "SVG Compressed (*.SVGZ)" are best for saving high-resolution vector images for web. The compressed version reduces file size by 50-80 %, but you may be limited with where you can open the file later.
- "Adobe PDF (*.PDF)" is a reader version, which is good for when you need to show your document to others who don't have Adobe Illustrator installed.
- "Adobe FXG (*.FXG)".
13
Then, just click "Save" to save to your chosen format
.
You may get a pop-up box, depending on the file format.
14
Change the settings for the file format
.
For example, in *.AI files, you can choose the version in which you save the file. You can check or uncheck other options.
15
Then, click "OK" to apply changes and save the document
.
