Reset A HTC Smartphone when Locked Out

Edited by Mohsin, Kirk, Lynn, Eng and 8 others

Android smartphones are almost perfect because they are reliable, easy to use, provide a lot of apps and can do nearly everything any other phone can do. When it comes to security, they offer simple slide lock, face lock, pattern lock, etc. Unfortunately, there is no way to erase the lock screen if you've forgotten your password. The only way is to Factory Reset the device. A Factory Reset will restore all the default settings, erasing your password, along with all of your installed apps. You can use the following directions to reset any HTC phone if you are unable to bypass the lock screen.

Questions and Answers

Hi dear. I just want to know how to do a reset.

My phone is locked. It asked for my Gmail account, but I forgot it. Can you please help?

You need to recover your Gmail account. You will have to do this on a computer (so you can reset your pattern later on). Once on the computer, go HERE.

Steps will then be given so you can recover your account.

On your device, make sure you are connected via data connection or WiFi. If not, proceed to the 2nd solution.

Once you have recovered your Gmail account, do the following:

  • On account lock page, enter your email address and password.
  • Device will then connect to the internet.
  • Once successful, device will now ask for new password/pattern.
  • Re-enter pattern/password.

If you are not connected via data connection, WiFi or you have not successfully recovered your Gmail, do the following:

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press the following:
    • Power button.
    • Volume up/down or both.
    • Home button (if any).

OR

Look for a reset button/hole.

  • Wait until you see a logo.
  • Press power button (5 times) if the menu doesn't show up.
  • Choose recovery mode.
  • Use volume buttons to navigate, and power to select.
  • Choose wipe data/Factory Reset.
  • Choose yes.
  • Device will confirm reboot or will reboot.

NOTE: This procedure will delete all apps and data on your device.

Frozen. Can't complete your 1st step to turn off phone. doesn't ring if I call it. Doesn't respond to recharger (battery is at 32%). First step is to shut off the phone. Can't do that. I have tried: Tried to turn it off. Tried to call it - no response. Tried to charge it -stays right @32%. I think it was caused by: Baffled I was writing a text at the time it froze.
