I've forgotten my unlock screen pattern. How do I change or delete a pattern?

Galaxy S6. Changed my screen lock from code to pattern. I entered and confirmed that pattern. Now, when I want to unlock using the pattern it tells me that the pattern is wrong. I know for certain that I entered the pattern correctly and what the pattern is. I did approve an emergency backup code which allows me access after about two dozen failed attempts at the pattern. Once in, the phone will not allow me to change back from pattern to code WITHOUT THE DAMNED CODE it refuses to identify. I'm flummoxed. Verizon said, "not my job". Samsung provided the solution of doing a total reset of the phone. I would lose years of photos and data. Not going to happen. I have archived my data. I have allowed remote access. Don't know what to do! Help!
