Reprogram Bixby Key to Open a Different App

Reassign the Bixby button on your Samsung device to something more useful. With the rollout of Android Pie on several of Samsung's flagship phones (S8, S9, S10, etc.), you're now free to reprogram the Bixby key to open another application. For those of you who have all but abandoned the physical Bixby button, this update may reacquaint you with an often forgotten feature.

The option to remap the Bixby button is only available on Samsung devices running the full version (not beta) of Android Pie. For the following Visi tutorial, we used a Samsung Galaxy S8.

**Please Note** Different mobile carriers release Android updates at different times. Contact your mobile service provider if you haven't seen the option to update your device to Android 9.

If you're unsure of which Android version you're running, or auto-update is disabled, follow the steps below

   From your home screen or app drawer, tap Settings.

   Tap Software update.

   If an update is available, select to install it

   If your device is fully updated, you'll see Your software is up to date.

   To see the previous update installed, tap Last update

   To quickly check your software version, open the Settings app, then tap About phone.

   From either the home screen or app tray, launch the Settings app.

   Tap Advanced features.

   Tap Bixby key.

   Select either Single press to open Bixby or Double press to open Bixby

   .

   Single press to open Bixby means double press to open another app, and vice versa.

   Tap the toggle switch to enable either single or double press.

   

   Once you've selected an app, you can change it in the future by tapping the gear icon.

   Test it out by pressing the Bixy key on your device.
