Hello, and welcome to VisiHow. In this video, we're going to show you how you can opt in or out of interest-based advertising when using Google search, on an HTC One M8.

To begin, turn the phone on by pressing the Power button, located on top of the phone

Once the phone has been activated, we'll see the Lock screen

To unlock the phone, swipe the screen upwards

Once the phone has been unlocked, we'll see the Home screen

At the bottom, we'll see some icons.

What we need to do now, is to find the Settings menu

To do that we need to swipe the Notification panel down. Start at the top of the screen and swipe downwards.

Once the Notification panel has appeared, we're looking for the icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen

We can see that there is a white cog icon, which is our Settings icon.

Press down on that and it will open up our Settings menu

We can now see that it says the word "Settings" in the top left-hand corner of the screen.

Let's scroll down now until we get to the "PERSONAL" section

We can see it says the word "PERSONAL", in the gray bar.

We want the section that says "Accounts & sync"

Next to the words, there is the "Accounts & sync" icon, which is a gray circle, surrounded by two gray arrows forming another circle.

Press down on this section and it will take us into the "Accounts & sync" menu

We want to use "Google" accounts

We can see it says "Google". Press down on that section.

We're in the "Google" section and we want the "Ads" option at the bottom

The first option is the one we want and the one that we're talking about in this video
.
It says, "Opt out of interest-based ads" and underneath, "Instruct apps not to use your advertising ID to build profiles or show you interest-based ads". This can obviously be a very useful function because it allows Google to show us advertising that may be more relevant to us and also, advertising that we might actually want to tap on. However, we may not like that Google is targeting us directly. We may want to opt out of this. Right now, we're opted in.

It may seem a little bit confusing because this option is turned off
.
The icon is gray, which means this option is turned off and we're automatically included. This function is automatically turned on. Everybody who has this option turned on will receive advertising based on their profile.

However, if we want to opt out of interest-based advertising, we need to press down to turn this option on
.
It seems strange to turn something on that we want to opt out of, but this is what we need to do. The icon has turned a greenish, turquoise color. That means we have now opted out of interest-based advertising.

If however, we do want to receive interest-based advertising, then press down to turn this function off
