Of course, texting or instant messaging sees far more daily traffic, but email is still king when a paper/digital trail is preferred.

This happens quite often; sometimes it's incidental, moving messages around can sometimes cause a mishap. Other times it's merely your mail provider's spam filters being overly protective.
