Hoarseness of the voice could be the culprit for that abnormal deviation in the volume and pitch of your voice. You could sound raspy or somewhat deep and strained which is different from your normal speaking or singing voice. There are different factors that contribute to having this medical condition. The most common cause is acute laryngitis which refers to the swelling of the vocal cords. Other trigger factors would include vocal abuse or misuse, vocal cord polyps, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), smoking, and allergies; to name some. People who are experiencing hoarseness would usually feel like they have a lump in the throat or have the urge to always clear their throat.

The treatment for hoarseness would depend on the underlying causes that precipitated this condition. It is best to seek the expert advice of an otolaryngologist as well as a speech and language pathologist. The most common treatment would be to rest your voice, quit smoking, drinking lots of water, avoiding caffeine or alcoholic beverages, room humidifiers, and proper vocal hygiene.
