Who hasn't, at some point or another, received a call or text on their Android device from an unknown person? It's pretty safe to say during the course of owning a mobile phone with an active number, you've received at least a few unwanted or suspicious looking calls or texts. Most devices will only identify a caller if they are programmed into your actual phone. Some service providers offer caller ID services, but they can be spotty at best. The solution; a free app (with paid option available) for your Android device called, Truecaller. A feature rich app that can identify unlisted numbers even while you're not connected to the internet. In addition to blocking spammy and unwanted calls, Truecaller now has a block SMS feature as well. Block unknown callers and texts and reap the rewards of an active community that updates their spam database day-to-day. For the purpose of this article, we used a Samsung Galaxy S4 to demonstrate the installation process and features.

   First thing we need to do is download and install the Truecaller app on Android

   Locate and tap the Play Store shortcut.

   Inside Google Play Store, type, "Truecaller" (without quotations) into the search box, then tap Truecaller when results populate.

   On the Truecaller app page, tap the green INSTALL button

   Tap the green OPEN button once the installation is complete.

   Tap GET STARTED

   Take a moment (now or later) to review the app's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

   Tap SET DEFAULT or CANCEL when the pop-up window appears

   The option to make Truecaller your default phone or message app is available at any time from Settings.

   Tap DENY or ALLOW for each permission request

   Please keep in mind; denying Truecaller access to some of your device's apps (contacts, phone, files, etc.) will limit the app's functionality.

   Once you've completed allowing/denying the permissions, Truecaller attempts to verify your device automatically

   On the Create a Profile screen, tap; Facebook, Google, or TYPE NAME MANUALLY.

   

   If you selected either Facebook or Google, enter your username/password when prompted

   If you selected the manual option, enter your name and email, then tap CONTINUE.

   Once your phone number has been successfully verified, you'll redirect to the "Call" screen

   Here you can see recent calls placed and received, detailed by day.

    The next screen is the "Search" function

    Type in either a name or phone number in the search box to look up contacts.

    This screen is where you manage "Block" settings

    You can check for spam updates by tapping the "CHECK FOR UPDATES" button.

    

     

    1. The first option inside block settings is the "Block Spammers" checkbox. Leave this checked if you want to eliminate unwanted calls.
    2. The second setting is the "Block Hidden Numbers" checkbox. Leaving this checked will block any number that shows as unknown.
    3. The third option inside block settings is "Block Method". Choose either; Reject Automatically or Ring Silently.

    The last screen is your contacts

    Similar to Android's stock contacts function, here you can make calls, edit existing, or add new contacts.

   Access app settings by first tapping the menu icon in the upper left corner, followed by tapping "Settings" from the list.

   The first group of settings is labeled "General".

   

    

   1. Availability is the first setting within General settings. Toggle this switch off to hide your availability.
   2. Tap in call history. Here you can select either "Call" or "View profile".
   3. Who can see my profile information? By default, this setting is set to "Request Only". You can switch it to, "Public".
   4. Copied numbers. Leave this setting on if you want Truecaller to identify numbers you copy anywhere.
   5. Messaging apps. Turn this on to identify unknown senders in WhatsApp, Viber or Telegram. This setting needs notification access.
   6. Auto download images. By leaving this setting off, Truecaller will only download profile images while connected to WiFi. If you don't mind profile images being downloaded using your data, you can switch this on.
   7. Dial pad feedback. You can select between; Silent, Vibrate only, Sound only or Sound and Vibrate.
   8. Speed dial. This is where you can assign a speed dial number to your contacts.
   9. Missed calls notifications. Turning this on will allow you to see names and photos of missed calls. To use this option, you need to allow True caller notification access.
   10. Remind me of missed calls. Leave this on and you will receive a reminder when you forget to return a call you missed.
   11. Clear missed calls. If you select this option, the standard dialer on your device will open momentarily to clear out missed calls when you launch True caller.

   The next setting is "Ringtone

   Here you can set the ringer volume and choose your ringtone.

   The following setting screen is for the app language

   The default is set to "English" but you can select which language you prefer.

   

    

   1. On this screen you can adjust "Caller ID" settings such as; show unknown callers, phonebook contacts, after call details and download True caller for SMS.
