Hide or Deactivate Online Status for Facebook Messenger on Android

There are many instances when you may want to quickly check or respond to a specific message, without having to chat with anyone. With a healthy list of contacts, it's inevitable that some of them will be online, pretty much all the time. A good way around this, without of course having to explain to friends and family why you can't chat, is to hide or turn off your Facebook Messenger status. To demonstrate how to do this, we used a Samsung Galaxy S5.

Turn Online Status Off

    First thing we need to do is open up Facebook Messenger app. Tap the messenger icon and sign in (if you're not signed in automatically).

    On the home screen, tap the menu icon in the lower right corner.

    On the following screen, tap the "Active" tab near the top.

    Once you've tapped the ACTIVE tab, a toggle switch will appear just below it. Tap the switch to hide your online status.

    Now that your online status is hidden, you'll no longer be able to see if your contacts are active. You'll also appear as offline to your contacts.  
    1. You can still see and reply to all of your messages while chat status is turned off.

Turn Online Status On

    Turning your online status back on can be done it two ways. The first is by simply tapping the "Active" toggle switch back on.

    The second way is to tap the home screen icon in the lower left corner.

    On the home screen, tap the "TURN ON" button near the top.

Follow the five steps above the next time you want to send or read a quick message but don't want to appear online. If you're short on time, or would rather not explain to your contacts why you're not available, turning your online status off is a great alternative.

  • If you find yourself having to constantly hide your online status, it might be a good idea to explain to your friends why you're always showing as offline.

How do I remove the Green Dot from Facebook and Messenger on my ZTE Android phone?

I have a ZTE Android LTE 4 model number n9136 all the information I've gathered from YouTube and from just asking Google it shows how to do it but on my phone I don't have that menu icon at the very bottom it's very frustrating I need to remove that Green Dot from Facebook and messenger please help me I'm very very annoyed by this been at it for 2 hours. My situation is different because all of the tutorials and YouTube videos and explanations my phone doesn't have the same icons to do it that easily there has to be another way for this model please help me. I have tried: YouTube videos Googling the question trying all of the options that are shown and all those phones that they show all the menu screens are all different than mine. I think it was caused by: Nothing really caused the problem it's on everyone's phone that Green Dot with Facebook and messenger I just can't remove it on my phone because there's got to be another way to do it other than the ways that they show on YouTube and all the tutorials my phone just does not have the same icons and Graphics that the phones that they show on mine
