Blackheads Explained
Blackheads are a chronic inflammatory condition of the hair follicles that can occur anywhere on the body. This condition is caused by hair follicles producing too much sebum and clogging up skin pores on your face. You can get blackheads on your face, palms, arms and legs. You can even get blackheads on your feet.
These clogged hair follicles, which are black pin-sized blemishes, are also known as comedones. Blackheads occur when hair follicles become infected, and the oil gland at the base of the follicle overproduces an oily substance called sebum. They look black because light reflects inside of the open pore of the hair follicle, revealing the excess sebum. A whitehead is caused by the same issue, with the difference that the pore is closed, causing pus to form, giving the comedone a white raised appearance. Blackheads tend to be flat and oily in appearance, but sometimes the sebum mixes with a protein called keratin that is also produced by hair follicles to produce a hard plug that can cause swelling, redness and a dirty appearance to the complexion.
The causes of blackheads include:
- The overproduction of oil in the sebaceous glands during puberty
- Hormonal disturbances during menstruation that cause too much sebum to be produced
- Smoking, which causes dead skin cells and poor circulation, resulting in the inflammation of hair follicles
- Poor hygiene, which can cause blackheads on the feet, hands, neck and face
- Shaving with a dirty or dull razor blade that causes ingrown hairs or infections can contribute to blackheads
- Over washing the skin, which provokes the skin to produce even more oil and causes blackheads
- Touching the skin often out of nervous habit, causing infection to spread to the pores
- Exposure to direct sun over a period of years can cause comedones
- Some birthmarks chronically over-produce sebum causing skin problems
There are many ways to clear up blackheads, using natural remedies, do-it-yourself home remedies and medicated products, as described in the methods below.
Get Rid of Blackheads With DIY Home Remedies
You can find many of these remedies in your kitchen or bathroom cupboard or at the corner store.
Method 1: With A Warm Compress
Steaming your face with a warm compress helps open the pores and soften the clogs in oily pores.
- 1Make sure that the cloth is big enough to cover the area that you would like to treat for blackheads.Soak a large clean rough washcloth in very hot water.
- 2
- 3It is normal to feel hot and sweaty. This is helpful because it means that the oil in your blackheads that is plugging up your pores are melting.Leave the compress on your face or other part of the body to be treated for at least 15 minutes or longer if you feel you can take it.
- 4At this point you will see grime and oil being lifted out of your skin. If necessary use a comedone removal tool to extract any remaining blackheads. However, do not force the blackhead to be removed as the skin is very tender and prone to injury after this treatment. Instead, wait to steam your face again tomorrow and then attempt to remove the more stubborn blackheads.Wipe your face clean with a cotton puff.
- 5This helps close your pores and makes you feel cool and fresh. If your skin feels very dirty, you can wash it with a mild disinfectant cleanser or soap such as Pears soap or Neutrogena.Rinse your face with very cold water.
- 6
- 7Steaming blackheads with a compress is one of the gentlest, least invasive ways to rid your skin of blackhead comedones. You can use a hot compress on your skin to remove blackheads every day if you like.
Method 2: With Steam
Steaming your face with a vaporizer or by leaning over a pot of hot water is one of the easiest and most effective ways to get rid of blackheads on the face. This works by opening the pores so that the skin can sweat and push the softened comedones out so that they can be removed.
- 1The idea is that you are going to make a hood that traps steam beneath it so that your skin can be steamed.Drape a thin cotton terry towel over your head.
- 2Note that the steam you are using must be warm or the oily clogs inside of the pores will not be able to soften so that they can be removed.Boil water and let it cool down or use the hot vapor setting on vaporizer.
- 3Do this for about ten minutes. Do not keep leaning over the steam if you feel that it is burning your skin in anyway. It is normal for your face to feel like it is sweating.Lean over the steam source with the towel draped closed over your face.
- 4
- 5Press the tool on the blemish and squeeze the contents of the blackhead out. Use a tissue to wipe any debris from the pores away. Do not force the contents of any pore out or pick at a blackhead as you could cause scarring. It is best to wait for the next steaming treatment before you attempt this one more time.If your face still has blackheads, remove them with a cosmetic blackhead removal tool.
- 6Witch Hazel is a natural disinfecting agent that also closes your pores. You can use another type of toner, as long as it is alcohol-free. You want to avoid using alcohol based toners and cleansers as they dry out the skin and prompt another breakout of blackheads.Clean and disinfect your face with Witch Hazel toner.
Method 3: With Crushed Aspirin
Crushed Aspirin contains salicyate, which helps polish and resurface the top of the dermis. This helps soften and remove the oily plugs at the top of the skin pores. Aspirin is also a potent anti-inflammatory, which helps get rid of redness in the skin as well as any pain or swelling that might be associated with having blackheads or attempting to remove them.
- 1The aspirin should easily shatter into a fine powder. You can use a fork or an actual mortar and pestle to crush the aspirin if you like. If you are treating a large area of your face you might want to use more aspirin.Crush six to seven aspirin in a small bowl.
Method 4: Get Rid of Blackheads With Glue
A reliable DIY folk-remedy for getting rid of blackheads is to use white glue. The brand most recommended is Elmer's Glue. This is a drippy white glue that does emit mild fumes. If you are allergic to glue, it is very important to note that this is not a recommended blackhead removal method for you. However, most people do not react because the glue is used in schools and presumably very safe for kids. This method is primarily used on the face, although you can easily use it on any part of the body. After you use this method it is best to let your pores air out for a while. There is no need to apply any heavy creams or moisturizers.
- 1Many drug stores and grocery stores also carry it in their stationary section. Do not buy a generic brand or any other brand of glue as your results may not be the same.Purchase white Elmer's Glue at a stationary store.
- 2You can use your fingers or a popsicle stick to apply the thick white glue. If this is too messy for you can also apply it with a small cosmetic brush or cosmetic spatula. The idea is to make sure that the glue coats the skin evenly so that it can be peeled off of your skin in one piece.Untwist the nozzle of the glue and apply the white glue over the affected part of your body.
- 3That is normally how long it takes for the glue to dry on your skin. It is normal for your eyes to water a bit, thanks to the fumes of the glue, which are irritating for some. If you want to shorten the drying time of the Elmer's glue then take a blow-dryer to the treated areas. Do not hold the blow dryer too close to your skin.Leave the glue on your skin for at least fifteen minutes.
- 4It is fine to scratch at the hardened to glue if you need to do so to get it off your skin. This is the point at which you will see the blackheads being removed on the back of the hardened glue.Peel the glue off your skin.
- 5This will get rid of the sticky feeling left by the glue residue. Make sure that the cleanser you use is alcohol-free to prevent your skiing from getting too dry. If the treated area of your skin still feels very sticky after the application you can apply some rubbing alcohol to remove any glue residue that remains.Wash any remaining glue off of your skin with a mild cleanser.
Method 5: With Rubber Cement
This remedy is a bit toxic because of the fumes. It is best to apply this remedy quickly to avoid the watery eyes and slightly dizzy feeling that can come with using it. If you are at all a sensitive type or are prone to headaches or breakouts from exposure to latex materials or products, then stay away from using this blackhead removal method.
- 1If you apply the rubber cement too thickly it will not be dry enough for you to remove within two minutes, which is essential so that you do not get overwhelmed by the smell of the glue. If you feel dizzy during this treatment, remove the glue immediately with an abrasive skin cleanser and water.Use the brush that comes with the bottle of rubber cement as an applicator to apply a thin layer of the rubber cement to the area of your skin affected with blackheads.
- 2Sometimes the rubber cement will come off of your skin in one piece, like a skin mask. Other time it may roll up on itself and you may find yourself rolling many little ball of dried up rubber cement on your skin. If you do end up with a ball of rubber cement you can use it to pick up any other glue residue on your skin.Leave the glue on your skin for two minutes and then start peeling it off.
- 3
Method 6: With Duct Tape
Duct tape is very gummy and sticky and you can use a piece of duct tape in the same way you would a commercial Biore strip. Be careful of using this method on areas of your body that are very hairy, such as your underarms or in the crotch area, as you could pull out a lot of hair along with the blackheads. Also pulling out hair could be very painful.
- 1It is a good idea to treat one area at a time so that you can focus on what you are doing. Covering your entire face or a big area of skin with duct tape could get uncomfortable. This treatment works best on skin that is clean and very dry.Cut a square piece of duct tape that is big enough to be used on the area treated.
- 2You can depress the tape right into the flesh with a deep stroking motion. Most people find that duct tape is very effective for treating blackheads on your chin, nose, palms and feet.Use the tips of your fingers to press down hard on the tape in the area to be treated.
- 3Remove the tape in one swift motion for best results. A look at the underside of the tape should reveal the black heads you have pulled out of your skin. Discard the tape.Leave the tape on for two minutes and then peel it quickly back.
- 4A glycerin-based disinfectant product by Neutrogena or Oil of Olay Foaming Cleanser is preferred as these products will not dry your skin out.Cleanse your face gently with a mild cleanser.
- 5Do not apply a heavy or oily cream after this treatment or you could clog your pores again. Conversely, do not apply a drying agent like rubbing alcohol, or you could provoke your skin pores into producing more sebum and begin the whole cycle of chronically breaking out in blackheads again.Pat your face dry and let your pores dry out for several hours.
Method 7: With Scotch Tape
Scotch tape can help remove blackheads fast, especially if your skin is a little dryer. If your skin is very oily, scotch tape may not be as effective as duct tape for removing blackheads. Avoid putting the scotch tape on areas of your body that are hairy as removing the tape could be quite painful. It does not matter whether or not you use clear or translucent Scotch tape although the clear transparent type might be a bit tackier than the translucent type.
- 1You may have to cut several strips to cover the whole area. It is recommended that you use one strip only once, as Scotch tape does not stay sticky enough for you to use it repeatedly over the same area and in fact, reuse of a strip could spread bacteria and infection from comedones that have already been pulled.Cut strips of Scotch tape that are big enough to be used on the area treated using the blade that comes on the dispenser.
- 2Make sure your skin is very dry. As this type of tape is transparent you may actually be able to see the comedones of the blackheads poking out of your skin as you smooth the tape down over your skin.Press the Scotch tape on the area to be treated and press hard with your fingers.
- 3Remove the tape in one swift ripping motion the blackheads out of your skin.. A look at the underside of the tape should reveal the black heads you have pulled out of your skin. Discard the tape.Leave the tape on for about a minute and then peel it quickly back.
- 4
- 5Do not apply heavy moisturizers, powders or make up until your face no longer feels sticky to the touch.Pat your face dry and let your newly cleaned pores air out for a while.
Method 8: With A Home Waxing Kit
Home waxing kits were originally developed to remove hair. As the wax reaches deep into the skin follicles to pull hair out by the root, it also manages to pull out the comedones from clogged up pores. You can use this type of waxing treatment in many places on the body including the face, neck, shoulders and back. This is also a good treatment to use on any part of your body that also has hair, such as your toes, chin or your underarms.
- 1Be sure to buy a type of wax that allows you to warm it for a few seconds in a microwave. If the kit does not come with applicator sticks, you must buy popsicle sticks, plastic knives or a cosmetic spatula to apply it yourself. Good brands to buy are Veet, Nads and Nair.Purchase a home waxing kit.
- 2This is best accomplished by covering your head with a towel, holding your head about six inches above the pot and letting the vapors from the hot water steam your face. You can also use a commercial facial vaporizer appliance that is set to a warm setting this to accomplish this. It is not recommended that you use a hot humidifier as they are too temperamental and it is too easy to burn yourself if the unit suddenly shoots a spout of steam.Open your facial pores by steaming your face over an open steaming pot of water on the stove.
- 3Make sure your face is very dry before you start. Wax will fail to stick to oily skin and dirt will interfere with the pulling action of the wax.Dry your face well with a towel.
- 4For most brands this means melting the wax in the microwave for three to four minutes. Some brands will also give you instructions for melting the wax over a double boiler on the stove.Heat the wax in the waxing kit according to the manufacturer's directions.
- 5You can also use the flat side of plastic knife, a popsicle stick or a cosmetic strip. Some people prefer to wear gloves as they apply the wax a it allows them to reach a more specific area.Apply the warm wax to your skin with an applicator.
- 6If your kit did not come with these you can use a piece of very thin muslin, very thin cotton or a piece of cheesecloth. The material that makes up a wrap around bandage also works well for this. Just make sure you cut the material into strips that will fit the area to be treated.Press one of the paper strips that came with the waxing kit on top of the wax and rub it firmly.
- 7
- 8If your skin is known to be very oily, then skip the moisturizing and instead dab Witch Hazel toner lightly on the treated area.Rinse your face with cold water and apply a gentle, oil-free moisturizing lotion.
Method 9: With A Lemon and A Toothbrush
One of the simplest and quickest ways to get rid of blackheads is to scrub them away using lemon juice and a toothbrush. The lemon juice is astringent and thoroughly cleans oily skin. The toothbrush is used to scrub away the tops of blackheads that you have gently steamed with a hot damp cloth.
- 1
- 2You could juice the lemon if you want, but it is not necessary. You could also use bottled lemon juice if you like but it the most effective juice you can use is from a freshly sliced, organic fruit.Slice a lemon in half and rub a clean toothbrush in the fruit fibers.
- 3Keep dipping the brush in the fresh lemon juice to replenish it. It is fine if the juice is running down your skin into unaffected areas, just as long as you make sure you are scrubbing the area affected with the blackheads.Vigorously scrub the area that you need cleaned of blackheads with the brush.
- 4If any of the comedones in your skin do not come lose, you can work at them some more with a blackhead removal tool. When you have removed the blackheads, wipe the lemon juice, along with any oily debris from the comedones off of your skin.
- 5
Method 10: By Working Up A Sweat
Warmth and bodily secretions from sweating can help work up enough slickness on the skin to actually soften and loosen the tough oily top plugs on the blackheads. It is the equivalent of steaming pores open, but it is effective because it is from your own system and from the inside. Before you become overheated by working yourself up into a drippy sweat, it is important for you to make sure that your body can handle your exertion, so check with a doctor first.
- 1
- 2Any blackheads that do not allow themselves to be removed immediately with a swipe of clean cotton can be tackled with a cosmetic comedone removal tool. Press the looped end of the tool down on the blackhead and eject its contents. Wipe the cellular debris and oil from the pore expulsion with a tissue.Remove the blackheads from your face with a cotton ball or pad.
- 3It is important to wash any of the oils expelled from your body off of your skin to prevent bacterial reinfection.Shower well, be sure to lather your body with medicated cleanser or soap, such as Oil of Olay or Neutrogena and dry it well.
Tips and Tricks
- You can cast a handful of mint, eucalyptus or a few drops of citrus or lavender essential oil in the steaming water to enhance the experience of steaming your face.
- You can use a normal humidifier to steam your face or you can buy small vaporizors that are specifically meant for use on the face.
- Be aware that some people suffer from salicylate sensitivity that may cause their skin to suffer from an allergic reaction
Get Rid of Blackheads With A Homemade Pore Strip
Homemade pore strips mimic the action of the commercial product called Biore Pore Strips that removes blackheads from pores. These are simply pieces of cotton, cheesecloth that are pressed against the area that has blackheads and then pulled away to pull the comedones with them. The area is usually coated with some kind of sticky substance to help pull the blackheads out of the pores,
Sometimes homemade pore strips are made from sticky substances that form a film or mask once it is left to dry on the face. These homemade pore strips for blackheads can be used anywhere on the body but are mostly used for removing blackheads on the chin and nose.
Method 11: With a Honey and Milk Homemade Pore Strip
The honey in this mask helps the pore strip stay sticky and the milk has lactic acids in it that helps resurface the top layer of skin and tighten and close the pores. This simple recipe for a homemade pore strip dries into a thin film that you can peel back from the skin to remove blackheads.
- 1You want to make sure that the mixture is cool enough to apply to your skin but still warm before you apply it to your face. Be sure to test this as every microwave is different when it comes to heating liquids. You can also warm this substance up in a small metal pot if you like.In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 1 teaspoon of honey with 2 teaspoon of milk and warm it for five seconds.
- 2Use a make-up brush, cotton ball or your fingers to apply a thick film of the mixture over the area that needs treatment for blackheads.
- 3
- 4
- 5If your face feels sticky you can wash it with a mild oil-free cleanser, preferably a medicated one like Neutrogena.Rinse your face well with cold water.
Method 12: With a Gelatin and Whipped Cream Pore Strip
Gelatin and any dairy product can help create a sticky, almost elastic mask that can be used to pull blackheads out of the skin. The cream contains lactic acids that help clean and resurface the skin and the gelatin has a hydrating quality. The fats in the cream and the gelatin work together to help the mask cling to the skin. This mask works best on the face, neck and top of the hands.
- 1
- 2
- 3You want the cream and gelatin mixture to be cool, but thick enough to spread on the skin.Chill the mixture for about fifteen minutes.
- 4The thicker you apply it, the longer you will have to leave it on before it dries. If the blackheads that you have on your skin are very tiny, use a thinner layer of the mask mixture on your skin.Apply the gelatin and whipping cream mask with a popsicle stick, brush or cosmetic tool over the area of skin where you want to remove blackheads.
- 5
- 6It is normal for the treated areas to look a little pink after treatment as the shrinking mask also draws blood to the surface of the skin.Wash your face with a clean, roughly textured washcloth to remove any small strings of milk and gelatin strip from your skin.
- 7If your blackheads get worse, discontinue the treatment or slow down to only doing the mask every couple of days.Repeat this treatment every day until your blackheads are gone.
Method 13: With a Honey and Cinnamon Pore Strip
This particular blackhead removal strip requires a strip of cotton or a piece of tissue paper applied on top to work. The honey supplies the stickiness and the cinnamon stimulates the circulation, causing the pores to open up and sweat out their contents. Honey is also an anti-bacterial substance that helps stop the chronic cycle of skin inflammation by killing off skin environments that lead to the overproduction of sebum.
- 1Mix well. You can use any type of honey but liquid honey works best. If your honey seems to thick you can liquefy it by warming it up for a few seconds in a microwave.Mix one tablespoon of honey with one tablespoon of cinnamon in a small bowl until it becomes a thick paste.
- 2Spread the mixture as evenly as possible and as thinly as possible. If it is too thick, it may not dry.Use a cosmetic spatula, brush or your fingers to apply the honey and cinnamon paste to the area of your skin that is affected by blackheads.
- 3Press your fingers over the tissue or cheese cloth and press hard. The paper or tissue will stick to your skin and harden as the honey mixture dries.Press pieces of tissue or cotton cheese cloth on top of the layer of cinnamon and honey paste.
- 4You should be able to feel the mask tightening and pulling oil out of your pores as it hardens.Leave the cinnamon and honey strips on your face for about twenty minutes or until it feels stiff and dry.
- 5It is normal for your skin to appear a bit pink after treatment. If it does not separate from your skin in one piece that is fine.Peel the blackhead removal strips back from your skin in one quick, but smooth motion.
- 6
- 7Some people are sensitive to cinnamon or cassia oils, so if your problem with blackheads becomes worse after doing this mask, this could be the case. If so do not do the mask at all.You can do this blackhead removal treatment two to three times a week if necessary.
Tips and Tricks
- Always make sure that your skin is very clean and dry before applying the homemade pore strips to the skin as strips will not stick very well
- If for any reason the two-ingredient pore removal mixtures are not tacky enough to stick together on their own, you can always thicken them by pressing toilet tissue or cheese-cloth over the applied mixture to strengthen it and let it dry; then use the applied tissue or cloth to peel it off and remove the blackhead comedones
Get Rid of Black Heads Naturally

Silica is a granular magnesium substance that is both a gel and a scrub. As well as being an exfoliant, silica gel is full of magnesium, which helps calm inflammation of the pores and halt the production of sebum. - 1
- 2Silica is both gel and flakes and before applying it, you need to make sure that both substances are merged together or the mask will be too thin.Shake the silica bottle well before use.
- 3
- 4As it dries, you will feel it tightening your skin pores and pulling at the oily clogged pores of your dermis.Let the silica sit on your skin for about fifteen minutes.
- 5
- 6Magnesium is very nourishing for the skin and over a period of days you will see your skin become smoother and your pores will become tighter and smaller. You can do this treatment every day.

Iodine also stimulates the skin cells to help them fight off disease and also assists the skin in removing toxins and bacteria. Epsom salt is a mineral rich exfoliant that is used to help soften and open up clogged pores. Epsom salts contain magnesium, which also helps to calm and soothe red or abraded skin.
- 1
- 2In most cases, this mixture will just seem to magnetize dirt and oils to the surface of the skin.Scrub the area of your skin that is affected by blackheads with an iodine and salt scrub.
- 3You do not want to wash your face after this treatment as you want the minerals and healing constituents from the mask to continue to permeate your face right afterwards for a few hours.Rinse your skin thoroughly with very cool water and then pat it dry with a towel.

Green tea is also full of potent antioxidants that help fight bacteria on the skin. The sugar in this scrub helps attract moisture to the skin and prevent inflammation. It is best to use a soft, organic white sugar, so the skin is not treated too roughly. The olive oil acts as a moisturizer that draws out other oils from deep within the pores. Honey is added to the mixture to make it sticky and to help fight the bacteria that causes the formation of blackheads in the first place.
- 1
- 2
- 3Exfoliating other areas of skin will result in a greatly improved looking complexion that glows, thanks to scrub stimulating the circulation just beneath the skin.[[Image:green tea_71697.jpg|center|frame|After you are done exfoliating leave the mask on for a few minutes.]Pick up about a tablespoon of the mixture and gently massage the area of your skin that is affected by blackheads for about a minute.

- 3
- 4

Questions and Answers
What does the black head or black comedones on palms signify?
Blackhead or black comedones on palm, what and why does it appear? One of the black head ended up as a pustule which had to be drained. What can be the reason for that?
It was probably a small splinter or cut that got infected and not a blackhead. While you can get a blackhead on your hand it is usually rare because the pores on the palm of a hand are different than those on the face or rest of the body.
Clear/gray bumps that itch are a result of an allergic reaction so if they itch then you touched something you are allergic to. Wash your hands frequently and if you work around wood, wear gloves to avoid splinters which can get infected.

I put rubber cement on my nose and cheek area and I am feeling a burning sensation. I tried pulling it off but it's stuck to my face! Whenever I try to pull. It actually makes my skin stick together even more. Is there any way you can help?
