I keep getting enter privacy protection password message on my Android phone?

It was perfect last night but when I turned it on a few hours ago the wallpaper had changed, messages flashed on screen saying tons of apps were not working and then nothing but 'enter privacy protection password' message as soon as I turn the phone on. I never had a password. the first thing I always do when I get a new sim/phone is disable the password. I have tried removing the SIM, SD card, rebooting, turned off WiFi - am stumped and stressed out. can you help? I have photos on it that I would hate to lose. I have no idea except nothing has worked so far. I do not know what to try next. If I take out the SIM and the sd could I restore factory settings without losing my photos? I have tried: Rebooting, rmoving sim/sd, turning off WiFi. (all of these, too many times to bear thinking about the rustration. I think it was caused by: I installed some apps last night before I put the phone on charge and left WiFi on. maybe I let some kind of virus in.
