Your status bar gives you some of the important information about your phone. It tells you of your phone's signal reception, battery levels and other features currently available. Your phone relays this information to you through the status icons. Get to know more about this icon and make the most out of your iPhone 5
List of status icons and their meanings
Below are the status icons of the iPhone 5 and their meanings. Familiarize yourself with these icons and get to know more about your phone.

Cell Signal - This icon shows the current signal status of your phone
.
Basically, the more bars there is, the more signal you phone has, and the better the experience you'll have with your voice and SMS services. When out of signal, this icon will change into "No Service".

Airplane Mode - This icon shows that you are on airplane mode
.
When you're on the airplane mode, you cannot use your phone's radio functions. Thus, you cannot do all of these activities: make and receive calls, send and receive SMS and MMS, surf the internet, connect to WiFi, connect to Bluetooth. Other non-wireless features of your phones can be accessed.

LTE - This icon shows availability of the s 4G UMTS (GSM) network service and your phone can connect to the internet over the network

4G (UMTS) - This icon shows availability of the 4G (UMTS) network service and your phone can connect to the internet over the network

3G (UMTS/EV-DO) - This icon shows availability of the 3G (UMTS/EV-DO) network service and your phone can connect to the internet over the network

EDGE - This icon shows availability of the EDGE network service and your phone can connect to the internet over the network

GPRS/1xRTT - This icon shows availability of the GPRS/1xRTT network service and your phone can connect to the internet over the network

WiFi - This icon shows that your iPhone is connected to an available WiFi Network
.
Basically, the more bars there is, the more WiFi signal you phone is getting. The stronger the signal is, the better call and internet experience.

Do Not Disturb - This icon shows that the phone is set to "Do Not Disturb" mode and thus ring tones and vibrations are disabled

Personal Hotspot - This icon shows that your phone is functioning as a personal hotspot

It allows connection and shares internet connection to other devices connected.

Network Activity - This icon shows that your phone has a network activity; it may be on a transition from one signal type to the other

Some third party applications may also use this as their icon for loading.

Call Forwarding - This icon shows that call forwarding is set up on your iPhone
.
Some or all calls will be forwarded to the pre-set number.

VPN - This icon shows that your iPhone is connected to the network using VPN service
.
VPN allows you to mask your network so as other parties may not track you easily.

Lock - This icon shows that your iPhone is locked
.
You cannot access your phone unless you enter the unlock code, or do the swiping gesture depending on how you set it.

TTY - This icon shows that your iPhone is set to function with a TTY device
.

Play - This icon shows that a media file (song, Audiobook, video, podcast) is currently playing
.

Portrait orientation lock - This icon shows that your iPhone orientation is locked to portrait mode

You will view and use your iPhone in portrait.

Alarm - This icon shows that there is an alarm set on your iPhone

Location Services - This icon shows that location services is turned on
.
Some application will show your current location.

Bluetooth - This icon shows that your iPhone has turned on its Bluetooth function

A blue or white Bluetooth icon means that Bluetooth is on and paired with another Bluetooth device. A grey icon means that the Bluetooth is turned on and paired with another device but the device is out either turned off or not in range.

Bluetooth battery - This icon shows the battery level of a paired Bluetooth device that is currently connected to it

Battery - This icon shows the battery level of your iPhone

A full green means that the phone's battery is full. The less green the icon has, the less battery you phone has. A lightning icon on the battery means that your iPhone is charging.

Syncing - This shows that your iPhone is syncing with iTunes on your computer or Mac.
Tips and Tricks
- Using of accessories on your iPhone may affect the wireless performance of your phone. It may possible get better reception or gets lower reception because of the attached or paired accessory.
- When on a low signal, you can try to change your location or reorient your phone to get better signal.
- Be sure to turn off airplane mode whenever you see that there is no need to use it anymore as you cannot receive calls and messages on this mode.
