Create an Art Brush in Adobe Illustrator CS6

You're watching VisiHow. In this tutorial, we're going to show you how to create "Art Brush" in Adobe Illustrator CS6 in Windows 7.
Steps

To begin, you should open Illustrator either from your desktop or by coming down to the bottom-left corner and clicking the Windows icon

This will reveal a list of your recently used programs where you may find Illustrator. It has a brown-and-orange icon with the letters "Ai".

If you still can't see Illustrator, use your search bar along the bottom and start typing "Adobe Illustrator"

Click "Adobe Illustrator CS6"

It will immediately start loading and will take you directly to your workspace.

Click "File" in the top left-hand corner

With your shape selected, click "Brushes" on the right side of the screen

The icon looks like brushes in a pot. Clicking the icon with brushes in a pot will open your brushes tab, where you will see Illustrator's default brushes.

Click the "New Brush" icon at the bottom of the pop-up box

The icon looks like a square with a folded corner. A dialogue box will appear.

You'll see a preview of the shape.

Now, type a name for the brush in the "Name" box

It can be something quite descriptive and memorable. Let's type "Round Brush".

Then, you can adjust the "Width" percentage by clicking and dragging the scroller

Alternatively, type a percentage in the box.

Underneath, you can click one of the "Brush Scale Options" radio buttons

It's recommended to experiment with these settings. You can come back an edit them later.

You can click one of the "Direction" icons

You can click the "Method" drop-down menu under "Colorization"

Then, you can select tints or hues. Let's leave it at "None".

You can click either icon for "Overlap"

This options helps to avoid overlapping corners.

Click "OK" to apply the changes

It's "Round Brush" in this video. You can find your brush in the "Brushes" menu.

Now, you can start drawing

As you draw, you will see the blue trail before you release the mouse button. It shows the trail of your stroke.

To edit your settings, just double-click your brush within the panel

Let's double-click "Round Brush".

Continue editing the brush if needed

Click "OK".

Click either "Apply to Strokes" or "Leave Strokes"

Let's leave the existing strokes as they are. "Round Brush 2" will be created.

Now, you can click "Round Brush 2" in "Brushes" to use the updated brush
