Preparing the Container

Welcome to VisiHow. In today's tutorial, we will show you how to create an apple blossom flower arrangement. This is an elegant centerpiece or table arrangement using crabapple blossoms, strawberry flowers, vinca or periwinkle vine and snowball viburnum. We will create our arrangement in a crystal compote dish. This is part one of our four-part tutorial, in which we prepare the container.

Steps

  1. 1
    Get a container
    .
Ours is a crystal compote dish, small enough to work for a small centerpiece, maybe for a tea party or something fun like that.

  2. 2
Get some floral foam and a cutting tool
    .
    Our foam is OASIS.

  3. 3
Place the foam in the container and assess the fit
    .
We want ours to go all the way to the bottom, but right now, it only goes about halfway in.

  4. 4
Make some cuts to the floral foam to adjust its fit in the container
    .
We will start by cutting off each corner to round them a bit.

  5. 5
    Save the scraps
    .
Even small scraps can be reused in other arrangements.

  6. 6
Place the foam back in the container to check the fit
    .
Ours is fitting much better, sitting right on the bottom.

  7. 7
Decide how high the foam should be
    .
We want ours to come above the rim of the container, because we want to have a lot of flowers and greens extending up and flowing over and down. This height will help us achieve that.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 1of4.mp4-canvas58 456313.jpg

  8. 8
Slide the cutting tool along the floral foam to create a line that will act as a guide for the cut
    .

  9. 9
Place the foam on a flat surface that is safe for cutting on, and cut the foam along the guideline
    .

  10. 10
Place the foam in the container once more to check the new fit
    .
We like the height and how well it is sitting in the bottom of the container. However, we need more leverage on the sides.

  11. 11
Cut some extra floral foam to add to the container if needed for stability
    .

Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  12. 12
Add the extra foam to the container
    .
Snap or cut anything that is sticking out. This is an inexact science. We just want to make sure that this is in there really well, and isn't going to slide around. Remember to save the scraps. They are useful in other kinds of containers, such as for a funeral arrangement. We will cut even more foam and create a few more wedges. We want this nice and tight.

  14. 14
Using floral tape, tape the foam down in the container
    .
We will tape right over it, from one side of the container to the other.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 1of4.mp4-canvas132 729532.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  15. 15
    Keep taping
    .
We are using clear floral tape. Green floral tape would be fine too, but since our container is a clear glass, we think that the clear tape will be a better choice.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 1of4.mp4-canvas139 178906.jpg

  16. 16
Pick up the container and shake it gently
    .
Make sure nothing is moving and that everything is firm and solid. This is really important. In fact, we are going to add one more strip of tape. We don't want anything falling out one we've put it in. However, we don't want to go overboard either. We don't want to take up too much of the space with tape, because we need exposed foam to put the flowers and greens in.

This concludes part one of our tutorial on creating an apple blossom flower arrangement

Now that we have prepared the container, we are ready for part two, where we begin to add flowers and greens. If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to leave them in the comments section below.

Add the First Flowers and Greens

Welcome to VisiHow. This is part two of a four-part tutorial, in which we show you how to create an apple blossom flower arrangement. In part one, we prepared our container. In this section, we will begin to add flowers and greens.

Steps

  1. 1
Hold up some greens to start assessing where they will be placed
    .
We want to make sure that some of our greens trail down. We want this to be an all-around arrangement. These work well in the center of a table, and look nice from any angle.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas21 447459.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  2. 2
Begin breaking the greens up into smaller sections
    .
These sections will be placed into the arrangement. We will start with the leaves of the bleeding heart. They're fantastic.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas34 262373.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  3. 3
Give the stem a fresh cut right before placing it
    .
We will do this for every stem we place throughout this tutorial.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas40 376826.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  4. 4
Press the stem into the floral foam
    .
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas45 980034.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  5. 5
Continue cutting stems and placing greenery into the foam
    .
Turn the container as we work. We want the stems to be cut pretty cleanly so that they will press into the foam easily. Once something is placed, try to leave it where it is. If we pull it out and re-place it, we risk creating an air pocket that a stem might meet and be unable to drink from.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas53 833409.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  6. 6
Place the greenery around the foam in a circle
    .
Remember, this is an all-around arrangement. This is one of the reasons that we cut our floral foam to come out of the top of the container, so we can give the illusion that things are cascading downward. Our stems are a little bit soft, which can sometimes be a challenge.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas91 256304.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  7. 7
Gather a second type of green
    .
We have some strawberry leaves that we're going to add. They're really awesome.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas146 11085.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  8. 8
    Use the same technique
    .
Cut each stem right before pressing it into the floral foam. Turn the arrangement as we work to identify bare spots that could use greenery. Allow the leaves to hang down, as this is what they would do in nature.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas176 390922.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  9. 9
Once satisfied, gather the "star" flower
    .
In our case, it's the apple blossom.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas182 777232.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  10. 10
    Decide on the placement
    .
We are going to place it vertically, so that it sits up above everything else. It has a woody stem, so we're going to use clippers instead of the knife to trim the stem.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas187 158644.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  11. 11
Place the apple blossom into the floral foam
    .
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas193 430915.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  12. 12
    Turn the arrangement
    .
We need to make sure that whoever is on the other side of the table gets to see the beautiful apple blossoms as well.
Fleurista Apple Blossom Compote 2of4.mp4-canvas201 40579.jpg
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  13. 13
Add more apple blossom if needed, to ensure that the arrangement looks good from any angle
    .
The apple blossom is the star of the show in this arrangement. We've placed them on top, but they can be seen all around.

This concludes part two of our tutorial on how to create an apple blossom flower arrangement
    .
In part three, we will add more flowers and foliage to create a fuller look. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them in the comments section.

  5. 5
Try to represent each color from each viewing angle
    .
On the whole, we try to stick with just a few colors in an arrangement. That way, things don't look too crazy. It keeps a more graceful look. This is also a bit more natural. A lot of times, things grow or bloom with just a few kinds or a few colors at a time. All of the flowers we are using are currently in bloom.

Turn the arrangement and continue adding snowball viburnum
    .
We're really down to where we're trying to cover up anything that we don't want viewers to see. Anything that isn't as cute as we want it to look needs to be covered up. That's what the snowball viburnum are doing in this arrangement. They're really nice greens, and they have the cute little snowball.

Keep an eye out for damaged or wilting items
    .
Due to the heat that day, and the fact that we were working in direct sunlight for the filming, we had to replace a few of our greens. Don't be afraid to do this if anything begins to wilt. In addition, it's usually best to work with fresh floral materials in the shade.
