When the document is ready, click "Object" in the menu across the top of the window

Move the cursor to "Pattern" in the drop-down menu

Then, move to the expanded menu on the right and click "Make"

On the vertical toolbar to the left side of the window, select the tool you would like to use to create your pattern

We will use the "Paintbrush Tool" in this tutorial. If you want, you can also choose an existing image.

Then, create a shape to use as a pattern by clicking and dragging your mouse

When you have finished, your drawing will be applied as a pattern in a particular format

You can then begin to edit different settings

You can check or uncheck "Size Tile to Art" and "Move Tile with Art"

These are the two options just below "Width" and "Height". They can be checked, depending on for what you are using your pattern.

Then, you can decide if you want your pattern to be overlapped or not by clicking the "Overlap" options

Depending on what pattern you're using, you may or may not see many changes to your design with this setting.

Finally, you can also select the copy pattern

You can do that by simply clicking the "Copies" drop-down menu.
