You're watching VisiHow. This tutorial will show you how to create a new document in Adobe Illustrator CS6 in Windows 7.
Steps
1
To begin, click the Windows icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen in the taskbar
.
2
Click Adobe Illustrator on the list
.
3
Alternatively, simply search manually in the bar along the bottom by typing "Adobe Illustrator"
.
4
Click "Adobe Illustrator CS6"
.
Illustrator will take you directly to the workspace.
5
From the Illustrator window, go to the top left-hand corner of the screen and click "File"
.
6
It is the top option in the drop-down menu. Alternatively, you can press "Ctrl" + "N" on the keyboard. A pop-up window will appear, in which we can begin to set the preferences for our document.
7
First, type the name in the "Name" field
.
You do not have to edit the name in the "New Document" window. You can change it at any point when saving the document. For this tutorial, let's name the document "Test".
8
Underneath the name, you can click the "Profile" drop-down menu
.
These options adjust the settings depending on the format you will use for your document. For example, the settings adjust accordingly depending on whether you click "Print" or "Web" document. In this tutorial, the color mode is set to CMYK because the "Print" profile has been selected. However, if you select the "Web" profile, the color mode changes to RGB. This also affects the resolution. The "Print" mode has a higher resolution than the "Web" mode, and you can see the changes as you alternate between the two modes.
9
You can change the "Number of Artboards" value
.
In the beginning, it is recommended to leave it as it is.
10
Next, we click the "Size" drop-down menu
.
We can choose international formats such as letter and A4. When you select the size of the document, the "Width" and "Height" values will automatically change below.
11
You can click the "Units" drop-down menu
.
By default, the units are measured in points; but you can select other units like inches. The "Width" and "Height" values will be automatically converted to the selected units.
12
For example, if you type the word "inches" after your entered measurement values and selected a "Units" option other than "inches", Illustrator will convert the entry to the units specified
.
Your profile option will also change to "Custom", since you have started to customize your document.
13
You can also change the "Orientation" of the document by clicking one of the boxes underneath "Units"
.
These options are a portrait canvas and a landscape canvas. You can also change this setting later.
14
Next, you can customize "Bleed" values for "Top", "Bottom", "Left", and "Right"
.
These settings adjust how far your document comes from the edges of the page. It is recommended to leave those as they are. This option also depends on your printing set-up.
15
Finally, you can click "Advanced"
.
This will show advanced settings.
16
It is recommended to leave the other options alone until you are more advanced with Illustrator
.
Then, once you're content with these adjustments, simply click "OK" to load your new document.
