Create a Cupcake Bouquet or Centerpiece

A great idea for your next party is to make a centerpiece or bouquet out of your favorite cupcakes. Not only will you create something pleasing to the eye, but at the end of the dinner - it will provide a delicious desert for you and your guests. Cupcake trees and cupcakes on stands are nice, but cupcakes in a bouquet will add flair and drama to your table arrangement. Talk about wowing your guests and saving at the same time!
Cupcake bouquets make unique centerpieces for buffet tables. Moreover, such a work of art makes it is easy to highlight a theme. Can you imagine a majestic bouquet of ruby red roses interspersed with white carnations at the center of a Valentine table or a basket of mini sunflowers for a golden wedding anniversary? The possibilities with this edible centerpiece are practically endless.
If you are planning to give away personally made cupcake bouquets as gifts, you will be glad to know that, though impressive, they are comparatively inexpensive. A gift with the same impact would cost upwards of $75, but with $20 or so, you can come up with a beautiful personalized cupcake centerpiece.
Cupcake centerpieces are extremely doable as a project, and they don't take all that much time to create once you've baked your cupcakes and prepared all the other materials. Here are some pointers to set you on your way as you prepare to arrange your edible blooms in a vase or basket.
- 1You will need a recipe for a relatively solid cupcake. Light-as-a-feather cupcakes are good to eat, but for this project, we'll need those with a firm base for your bouquet. - 2You must be fairly adept at icing your cupcakes with different types of flower designs. Although the rose icing lends itself most easily to the bouquet arrangement, there is often a need to fill the basket with various flowers such as carnations, dahlias, or daisies. In addition to flowers, do not underestimate the usefulness of leaves and ribbons when you make your edible creations.Advertisement
- 3Study available resources such as videos, slide-share files, and pictures so you can find designs you are comfortable with. Practice until you become at ease with recreating similar projects or creating your own.
What You'll Need To Get Started
- 2Gather your materials.
- Anywhere from 12-20 cupcakes - or as many you need for your design.
- A basket, or vase, or any decorative container with a brick or rock to give it weight.
- 5 oz. plastic cups to hold the cupcakes in place.
- A floral foam ball as base, covered completely with plastic wrap.
- Buttercream icing.
Putting Your Cupcake Extravaganza Together
Not it's time to put your creativity to work and put this project together.
- 2Into the center of the floral foam ball, skewer a plastic cup so that it is about 3 to 4 inches above the ball. Allow a tiny bit of the tip of the skewer to protrude within the cup and wrap this protruding part with tape. Do the same for the part of the skewer right outside the bottom of the plastic cup. These two bits of tape will keep the cup from sliding up or down.
- 3Insert a second plastic cup into the center cup and staple the two together.
- 4Working around the center plastic cup, begin to staple the other plastic cups so that you form the frame of your bouquet. Position the cups so that they follow the contour of the floral foam ball. The last outer layer should hide the floral foam ball by resting on it.
- 7Decorate with a bow around the basket or vase.
There are several ways to create your bouquet. One of the most popular methods is to ice the cupcakes first and then stick them into a styrofoam ball one by one, starting with the outer edge and working towards the center. Find out which style you are comfortable with and work on becoming skilled at it.
Tips and Warnings:
- Remember that your cupcakes are not lying flat on a perfectly horizontal surface. Most of them are somewhat inclined.
- Try to use frosting as sparingly as possible to keep the décor from becoming too heavy and sliding off.
- Ice the cupcakes down to the very edge of the cupcake liner, making sure the outer petals hide as much of the cupcake as possible.
- There is a greater risk of "sliding off" when the weather is warm. You can put the arrangement in the refrigerator until you arrange the buffet table, and you are ready to start the party. By the time the guests get to dessert, the cupcakes will be at room temperature.
- Practice makes perfect. Get some cheap store bought cupcakes and practice icing and arranging them until you figure out which arrangements you best work with.
- Experiment with different themes and colors. While you are at it, try different cupcake sizes and different methods for fastening your cupcakes into the composition.
