Steps

    You should have GIMP and a document open
    .
    You can either do this by creating a new document or opening an existing one from the "File" menu on the left-hand side of the screen.

    The "Toolbox" window can be moved and resized to see the main window

    Change "Width" and "Height" and click an option from "Layer Fill Type"

    In this video, "Transparency" is selected. This way, the watermark will have no background on top of other images.

    Use any tool to create a watermark to go over the top

    Usually, the watermark is a logotype or the name of a business, but it can be anything else. For this tutorial, we'll click the "Text Tool".

    After that, you can make the watermark more opaque or less opaque by clicking the "Opacity" bar

    The opacity depends on the background. You can also set the "Opacity" by entering the value in the box. It is recommended to set the opaqueness to 80% maximum, as you don't want to distract people from the image.

    Finally, you can save the image with the watermark

    Alternatively, remove or hide all of the layers besides the watermark layer and save the the transparent layer. Save or export the layer to JPEG (or another format), which you can open and put onto other layers.
