How can I make a nice neat tight braid?

I know how to braid but I have difficulty holding the hair with my hands or fingers I get so confused just want to an easy way I can braid or cornrow my hair while making the braid neat and tight. Thank you. P.S I have long straight hair. I have tried: Watching YouTube videos but I haven't quite found one about how to hold your hair while braiding in great detail. I think it was caused by: I don't know
