Connect Samsung Galaxy S4 to a Wi-FI Network
Edited by Leomar Umpad, Charmed, Eng, Jesza Delfin and 19 others
Some of your phone's applications require a working internet connection to be able to function or open. This includes browsers, instant messaging apps, video streaming apps, file downloading apps, and others. Internet connection is also required when you download applications from the Play Store or update your applications and phone.

There are two types of internet sources you can use with your Samsung Galaxy S4 - the network data service and the WiFi network. This VisiHow will discuss in more detail about connecting to a WiFi network.
Turn WiFi On and Off
To be able to use a WiFi network's connection, you need to connect to it by first turning on your phone's WiFi radio. To turn on or off this feature follow the steps below:
Turn WiFi on and off using the notifications panel
- 1Go to your Home screen.
- 2Open the Notifications panel by doing a dragging gesture from the top most of the screen to the lower portion of it.
- 3Look for the WiFi icon.
- 4Tap "On" it to turn it on.
- 5Tap again on the WiFi icon to turn it off.
- 1Go to your Home screen.
- 2Tap on the "Menu" button (left soft button).
- 3Look for the "Settings" menu and tap on it.
- 4In the settings menu, tap on the "Connections" sub-menu.
- 5In the connections menu, tap on "WiFi".
- 6Drag the WiFi switch to the right to turn it on.
- 7Drag the WiFi switch to the left to turn it off.
Join WiFi networks
You need to join to an available WiFi network in order to enjoy the network's internet connection. Some networks may be open and free to use, while others require a password. If the case is the latter, you need to know the network's WiFi password in order to have access to it. To join a WiFi network, follow the steps below:
- 1Go to your Home screen.
Things to note
- If there is only one WiFi network available, your phone will automatically connect to the available one.
- If there is more than one WiFi network available, your phone will automatically connect to the network that you have already connected with before.
- If there is more than one WiFi network available and you have connected to before to more than one of those networks, you will need to manually choose what network you would like to connect to.
- If you have already connected to a password connected network, your phone will automatically connect to it, assuming that the password has not been changed. If it has, you need to re-enter the new password again.
Add / Forget WiFi networks
Add WiFi networks
Some WiFi networks may have been set so you cannot find them by merely scanning available networks. Some require that you know the Network SSID and the password. If you are sure that you are within the range of a WiFi network and you know its SSID and password, you can connect to it by following the steps below:
- 1Go to your Home screen.
- 2Tap on the "Menu" button (left soft button).
- 3Look for the "Settings" menu and tap on it.
- 4In the settings menu, tap on the "Connections" sub-menu.
- 5In the "Connections" menu, tap on "WiFi".
- 6Drag the WiFi switch to the right to turn it on.
- 7Your phone should detect available networks, but won't be able to find the desired network.
- 8Go over the bottom of the available network list and tap on "Add WiFi network".
- 9Enter the network name in the Network SSID.
- 10Select the security type of the WiFi network.
- 11If it does not, leave it blank.Enter the password if it requires one.
- 12Tap on "Connect" to initiate connecting to the network.
Forget WiFi networks
If your phone is already crowded with a lot of previously connected WiFi networks and you want to clean it up or want to delete a WiFi network for privacy purposes, you can forget a certain WiFi network by following the steps below.
- 1Tap on the "Menu" button (left soft button).
- 2Look for the "Settings" menu and tap on it.
- 3In the Settings menu, tap on the "Connections" sub-menu.
- 4In the Connections menu, tap on "WiFi".
- 5Wait for your phone to display a list of all WiFi networks that you have previously connected to.
- 6Tap on the desired network name and tap on "Forget".
- 7The WiFi network should be deleted by now and will not appear on the network list.
Using Samsung S4 as a modem
Here's another cool feature you can enjoy with your Samsung Galaxy S4 - turning your own smartphone into a mobile hotspot or a modem. The Samsung Galaxy S4 can handle up to eight devices at the same time. They can connect to the internet through your Samsung Galaxy S4. What your friends need to do is turn on their WiFi connection and look for your WiFi network name. Just follow these simple steps:
- 1Go to your Home screen.
- 2Look for "Settings" and touch it.
- 3Select "Connections".
- 4Choose "More Networks".
- 5Select "Tethering and portable hotspot" and then touch "Portable WiFi hot spots" to activate it.
- 6Select "OK".There will be a pop-up message.
- 7Select "Portable WiFi hot spots" again and then choose "Configure".
- 8Just edit the Network SSID.On the configure page, you can change the name of your WiFi network so that your friends can easily determine what your network is.
- 9Change the password of your WiFi network because the given password is generally too long to remember.
- 10After making the changes, tap "Save".
- 11Your friends can now search for your WiFi network and enjoy using the internet on their devices.
Tips & Notes
- Once a WiFi network has been deleted from your phone, you cannot auto-connect to it when you turn on the WiFi. You need to go through the process again of joining or adding the WiFi network.
- If you cannot access a password protected WiFi network that you had previously connected to, the password may have been changed. Enter the new password by forgetting the WiFi network and joining or adding it again.
Questions and Answers
I am not able to delete a WiFi network on my phone. What should I do now?
When you have followed the steps properly and the WiFi network that you have deleted still shows on your phone, then do these procedures:
- Restart your phone. Turn On and Off the Samsung Galaxy S4 will refresh phone's memory and cache. The deleted network that is still showing will be deleted along with the cache once you restart your phone. If the cause is not a cache problem though, the network will still show.
- Turn off your WiFi. Turn off your WiFi and check if the network is still shown. If it is still shown, do the same procedures as indicated in the steps above and check again. The network should now be removed from the list of previously connected networks.
- You may be in a location where the WiFi network is available. If you are in a place where the WiFi network that you have just deleted is available, you may still see it when you scan your phone. However, when you turn off your WiFi and check previously connected networks, you will not be able to see the deleted network anymore. This is because when your phone will scan for WiFi networks, it lists down all available WiFi networks including those that you have already deleted As long as you do not connect to these networks, they will not be shown when you move out of the network range or you turn off your WiFi.
When I try to forget a certain network, the only two buttons that show up are "Cancel" and "Connect." If I click "Connect," then the forget button does show up, but clicking does nothing - it still shows up in my list. What should I do now?
The only reason why the network is still showing up because you are in a location where the network is available. However, try to move to a place where that certain WiFi network is out of range and you will not see it on your list of previously connected networks. To give you an idea, when you turn off your WiFi, your device will show a list of available networks and previously network connected to. When a certain WiFi name shows a signal, it means that the network is in range so your phone will still see it as long as the WiFi network is in available. If the network name says "Out of range" it means that the WiFi network is saved on your list. Tapping and holding on it will allow you to modify or forget the network.
As a summary, as long as you do not connect to the WiFi network available, it will not show on the list of previously connected networks; and as long as you are on a certain WiFi network's range, no matter how you delete it, your phone will still show it when it scans for available WiFi networks. Just do not connect to it so it won't be saved on your device.
I was thinking of getting a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini and using my home Internet as WiFi through wireless router, I don't have the phone, but I have read numerous complaints about WiFi dropping after Firmware upgrade
No problem, but no point in spending money on a wireless router, if I will have problems. Do you have any thought on that issue? Could it be just targeting specific Galaxy phones? Any thought appreciated.
