Meals are always more meaningful when they're made at home. Whether it's a special occasion or an ordinary day, nothing beats a home-cooked meal shared with the entire family or a loved one. When cooking main dishes, you always have to think of the right side dish to complement the different flavors. The main dishes usually feature meats such as turkey, beef, pork, chicken, and fish. This is because meats are more expensive than other sources of proteins. They also take a significant amount of space on the plate. Side dishes such as rice help punctuate the main dish. Why serve meals with side dishes?
Eating is an adventure. Every meal is an efficient way of exploring flavor, temperature, and texture combinations. With this, every cook, chef, or host knows that every meal should have a side dish. Side dishes provide a new dimension to the main meal. It may provide contrast that could highlight the flavors of the main meal or complement it in every bite. There are many choices of side dish recipes out there that you can mix and match with every meal. All you have to do is choose the right one to put some extra life into your main dish.
How to select the right side dish
Choosing the right side dish can be a challenge to every homemaker. Meals can easily turn boring or redundant if there are no side dishes or if the side dishes are always the same old batch of steamed vegetables. Below are some pointers on how you can come up with the right side dishes each time you present a meal:
- 1Consider color. We eat with our eyes before we actually taste the food. Presentation is a major factor in making the dish attractive enough to eat. Make sure that the dish you serve has a side dish has a different color than your main dish. If the main dish is dark, then you should have a light colored or bright colored side dish. If your side dish is the same color as your main dish, then your plate will be monochromatic, boring, and unappetizing.Advertisement
- 2Consider texture. Texture also plays a vital role in making the main dish more delicious. If the main dish is rich and saucy, then the side dish should be crunchy and a bit dry. If the main dish is dry, then the side dish should be rich or creamy. Firm vegetables should be sides to a brown or brownish main dish.Advertisement
- 3Consider temperature. There are certain dishes that call for hot or cold side dishes. If you are serving a room temperature dish, then a hot side dish is an order. A hot side dish could go well with a cold side dish, such as coleslaw.
- 4Be adventurous. When it comes to serving food, you should try things that are beyond what you have grown up with. Try to know more about other cuisines so that you can incorporate them into your daily menus. You could match the side dishes to the origins of the main dish so that the flavors will jibe well with one another.
- 5Consider the flavor intensity. Make sure that your side dish helps you get a pleasant experience from the entire meal. A very spicy main dish blends well with a non-spicy or a neutral side dish. In this case, use a plain side dish such as green salad, boiled vegetables, or plain unflavored rice.
- 6Consider seasonal ingredients. This goes for both the main and the side dishes. You will definitely end up with different flavors if you stick to the ingredients that are available on the market. It broadens the possibilities for more dishes, because you tend to come up with a new dish each time.
- 7Consider swapping the main dish and the side dish. You don't have to use cuts of fish or meat is your main dish. You can use vegetables as your main dish and just serve a palm-size serving of meat on the side. This is a healthier option, especially for those who would want to balance out their fiber, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
- 8Consider grains. Side dishes are not confined to vegetable or fruits. You can also use grains such as millet, barley, rice, polenta, and bulgur. These side dishes balance out the nutrient content of the dish by adding some carbohydrates to the meal you serve.
- 9Consider variety. You can serve more than one side dish with your main course, to add more flavors. Some people like to have a number of sides with their main dish because they're into having a party in their mouths. You can have vegetables, pasta, poached fruit, salsa, and more on the side. This will satisfy your guest or guests more. You can also come up with side dishes that are different from the origins of the main dish to give the meal a different kick.

Questions and Answers
Looking for a good side dish for dinner tonight?
I am making Balsamic Plum Glazed Pork Chops and am looking for a good side dish that will balance the richness of that main course?
In accordance with our recommendation to choose a dish that also reflects color, you could choose a purple or black rice, though some people would argue that they are a bit rich. The personal taste of rich or not is entirely dependent on culture and taste for rice though.
Another great option would be to select a light rice, but use a quality tea bag, such as a jasmine tea, or something similar, and put that in the rice so that the tea boils with the rice and absorbs some of the taste. This is a nice flavor that will be light, yet pleasantly offset the Balsamic Plum Glazed Pork Chops you are preparing. You can also get a sprig or two of mint to garnish the rice with, which will add to the aroma, without detracting from the main dish or otherwise conflicting with the scents.
I'm making a steak and I need to know what side?
For my husband's birthday tonight and I want a nice rice side dish to go along with it. Something easy, of course.. I think it was caused by: Oh my...
Rice is surprisingly versatile. An easy dish is to saute onions in butter. Saute the onions until they brown in caramelization. Then add water and cook the rice in the same pan. You can add some of your husband's favorite spices to the rice for extra flavor. Another favorite that I love to use as a side dish to beef is Spanish Rice from ilovetocook on Allrecipes. It is extremely easy to make and so deliciously flavorful.
What kind of rice dish would be served with steak?
My mom wants to cook it in her rice cooker.. I have tried: Well, I have looked at many pages on Google, but none of the pages have recipes for rice that can be cooked in a rice cooker that will go with steak.. I think it was caused by: I have no clue.
My favorite rice cooker recipe is Fragrant Yellow Rice by Eat Your Greens. The only difference I make is using chicken broth in the place of the water in the recipe. You will have to thoroughly wash out the rice cooker after you make this because the turmeric loves to leave a yellow tint. I usually make a triple batch and freeze the leftover rice for fast side dishes. If you can't find Jasmine rice, then substitute with Basmati rice.
Which rice dish to serve with sweet and sour pork?
I want to make a Chinese dish with sweet and sour pork so which side rice may I use
Really any plain white or brown rice can be used with Sweet and Sour Pork. For this dish, the rice is basically a filler to the main dish. The sauce from the sweet and sour pork is delicious on it's own and does not need an additional flavored rice side dish.
What rice dish would you recommend to serve with steak teriyaki?
I have both Japanese short grain rice and Jasmine rice. I'd like a simple rice dish that might enhance the teriyaki marinade of mirin, sake, shoyu and grated orange rind.. . Your offer of assistance is so appreciated. I don't want the rice dish to overpower, or compete with, the flavors of the teriyaki. It could be that plain rice is what I need. I have tried: Plain Japanese short grain rice and plain Jasmine rice. I think it was caused by: No problem, really. Merely want to serve the best rice side I can find to accompany the teriyaki.
Jasmine rice is particularly excellent with teriyaki. Compliment the dish by adding some orange zest to the fragrant Jasmine rice as you cook it.
