Learn how to quickly find out which iOS version your iPhone or iPad is currently running. Every iPhone or iPad ships with a specific iOS version, depending on the model, and typically receive four years of major iOS updates, after the release the device shipped with.

Why Do I Need to Know the iOS Version on My iPhone or iPad?

Each year when Apple rolls out a new stable iOS update, it comes with a variety of new and enhanced features. So, knowing which iOS version you're running is critical if you don't want to miss out on both security and device-enhancement updates. If you happen to have the auto-update option disabled, you could easily miss a significant operating system update.

For the following guide, we used an iPhone 7, running iOS 12.2. The steps below will work for any iPhone or iPad model.

Tips, Tricks, and Warnings

  • You can also check what iOS version you're iPhone or iPad is running by connecting your device to a computer, then launching iTunes. The iOS version is displayed in the section labeled, General Summary.
  • To check for software updates, go to; Settings > General > Software Update. Make sure to connect to WiFi before attempting to update your device unless you're OK with using your data.
