Change Galaxy S5 Lock Screen Settings to pattern unlock vs password vs swipe
Edited by Grimm, Doug Collins, Eng, GEW and 4 others
Hi, you're watching VisiHow. Today we are going to show you how to change and adjust the security settings on your lock screen. This works for all Android phones and Samsung Galaxy phones - in particular the Samsung Galaxy S5, which we have here.
Steps
1
We're going to press the Power or Lock button
.
Pressing that one time will open up the lock screen.
2
In my case, I'm going to swipe across because I have Swipe currently set
.
3
What we need to do is access our Settings button
.
Settings is found under Apps which is here. Tap Apps.
4
You can tap on the Settings gear icon
.
5
If you, instead, don't have that or you prefer another way, you can swipe down from the lock screen
.
6
You can tap Settings, here
.
7
There is another way that you do it, also
.
Let's press our Home button.
8
Let's press our Lock button again
.
9
Let's press the Power button
.
10
If you have the Swipe setting on, you can simply swipe down
.
11
You can access you Settings that way, as well
.
12
That's three ways to access your Settings from the Swipe lock screen
.
13
Now, we're simply going to go to the lock screen icon, which is under Settings and Quick Settings
.
We're going to tap on that one time.
14
That's going to open up my current screen lock settings which is under Screen Security - Screen Lock - Swipe
15
We're going to tap that one time
.
16
As you can see, there are a total of six options here
.
17
There is None - which means that your phone will automatically direct you to the Home screen as soon as you turn it on
.
18
There is Swipe - which I am currently using, where you simply swipe across the screen
19
There is Pattern - which requires you to draw a simple pattern
.
20
There is PIN - which requires you to enter a PIN code such as 1234
.
You can even enter in a longer PIN code like 12345678.
21
There is Password - which let's you enter a password like abcd or abcdefg
.
There is Fingerprint - which allows you to use your fingerprint. We will not be discussing fingerprint today. You can follow the link to fingerprint because fingerprint is more complex than any of the other settings and it doesn't always work - which is a complaint many people have about fingerprint settings on these phones and these devices.
22
So, let's go ahead and click on None
.
I'll show you what None does.
23
Press the Home button now
.
24
25
Now, normally we'd see the lock screen here when we'd press this Power button again - instead, we don't
.
26
27
28
29
30
We've had Swipe set up before but let's tap Swipe again
.
31
Instead of pressing the Home button, I'm just going to press the Power button now because we keep going back to the Home screen each time
.
32
33
Now I'm on my lock screen
.
Swipe across and back to Lock screen settings.
34
I can tap on the Screen lock again
.
35
Now I can setup a pattern - a medium security pattern
.
36
37
If like the pattern, great, I can continue
.
If I don't, I can retry.
38
So, I like that pattern, it's easy
!
39
40
41
42
Enter in a code (1234) in case you forget your pattern
.
43
44
45
46
There we are, we've got Screen lock settings
.
47
Now, let's press the Power button and press it again
.
48
Here we go, draw the screen lock and I'm in the phone
.
49
Let me show you what happens if you forget that (Pattern lock)
.
So let's press press the Power button to close the phone and press it again to start back up.
50
What are you going to do now? There's no option on the lock screen. What are you going to do?
51
52
Let's try another pattern - we're still not functioning
.
Let's try it again.
53
After you've entered in the incorrect pattern five times
:
unable to unlock the phone, 5 unsuccessful attempts to unlock your device. Try again in 30 seconds.
54
Now that we've done that, we have a different menu that pops up at the bottom
.
First of all: Try again in however-many seconds, counting down from 30.
55
56
57
58
In this case, if you forgot the pattern, you can tap on that
.
59
You can use your username and password and sign in
.
In my case, that is not something I have not setup yet.
60
What I'm going to do now is to draw my unlock pattern again, as you can see
.
61
Or, I can tap in my Backup PIN
.
62
My Backup PIN code, as you remember, is 1234
.
I'll just click Done.
63
Now I'm back in the phone
.
When you forget your pattern, your phone will automatically reset back to swipe - because you need to have some kind of security.
64
Now, I press the power button to get back to the swipe screen
.
65
Swipe down, like I should, for notifications
.
66
67
68
That's how you get those setup
.
Now let's click on Screen lock and let's go to something a little more advanced.
69
We're going to go to PIN
.
PIN is a little more secured pattern.
70
As I showed you before, let's enter 1234 (which is absolutely an insecure PIN code, do not use this)
.
Enter 1234 again. Use it (1234) if you really need a PIN code and you're the only one using the phone but it's not going to stop someone from getting into your phone.
71
Screen lock is now secured with PIN
.
What we do is we just press our Power button.
72
Press the Power button again to get back into the device
.
73
Now, we just simple enter in our PIN (1234)
.
We tap OK, and we're in.
74
We can change our screen lock PIN to something a little more advanced
.
75
We just have to enter our PIN to change it (1234)
.
Done.
76
We can change that to password - much higher security
.
77
78
As you're doing this, be very careful
.
You may think that you entered an "asdf" as I just did and you could actually hit "asdg". These keys are hard to see. So, "a" is gray, "s" is gray, "d" is gray and "f". Now you may think that I entered in "asdf" but maybe I didn't. Maybe I entered in those off keys. So, quickly press "asdf".
79
That's a simple password, I can enter more than that but let's just enter "asdf"
.
Tap on Continue.
80
Enter the password again, "asdf"
.
81
Now, as I showed you before, if I press and hold as "a"; I press and hold as "s"; I press and hold as "d", then I press my "f" and click OK, the password don't match
.
82
It's supposed to be "asdf", press OK
.
83
The screen lock is set to security password.
84
Then I can unlock my screen.
85
Now, I'm required to enter a password
.
Enter "asdf" and press Done.
86
Now, I'm back to my system
.
If I would like to, at this point, I can change my password again.
87
Enter "asdf" to change it to something else
.
Click Continue or Done.
88
Now I can change it to Fingerprint or None, or back to Swipe
.
We're going to show you how to do that fingerprint setup in another video.
89
I'm going to go ahead and put this back to Swipe because that's nice and easy for me
.
90
I'm going to close it and I'll show you that I'm back to Swipe
!
Thanks for using VisiHow. Have a great day. We look forward to seeing you again in one of our future videos.
