If you are the kind of person who stores information and data on your phone, then you should protect these important records by creating a backup in case your phone gets lost, damaged or wiped. When you have a backup file, you can restore the data to the same phone or another Galaxy phone whenever you need to. Check out the procedures below to backup and restore data on your Samsung Galaxy S5.
Back Up Application Data, WiFi Passwords, And Other Phone Settings Directly To Google Servers
If you want to backup your application data (e.g. current level, gold, achievements and other application-related information), passwords for WiFi access, and settings on your phone, then follow these procedures:
- 1You can also go to the Home screen by tapping on the Back button a few times.Go to your phone's Home screen by pressing the Home button once.

Backup Calendar, Contacts, And Internet Data Using Samsung Account
You can backup your calendars, phone contacts, internet data and memo through the cloud storage. First, you need to set up a Samsung account on your Galaxy S5. If you have not set up a Samsung account yet, you need to create one on your device. To use the cloud as a backup storage for your data, follow these procedures:
- 1You can also go to the Home screen by tapping on the Back button a few times.Go to your phone's Home screen by pressing the Home button once.
- 2This looks like a grid and has the word Apps under it.From the Home screen, tap the Applications list icon on your screen.
- 3From the list of applications, open Settings by tapping on it.
- 4If your Settings application is in grid mode, scroll down to the User and Backup section and tap on "Cloud".
- 5If your Settings app is in Tab mode, swipe the option list near the top, then tap on "General" and then "Cloud".
- 6Now, if you have yet to setup a Samsung account, tap on "Add Samsung account".
- 7A Samsung account is not only beneficial to backup all your important data but it also secures your device and gives you access to the following premium services; Lock your device, located your lost device, get selected apps, and track workouts, diets, and more.
- 8To setup a Samsung account, choose to create an account by tapping either, "create using your Google ID" or "Create Account",
- 9Once you have setup your Samsung account, tap on the account you just created.
- 10Next, tap on your account again.
- 11Sync will happen automatically after you tap each check-box.Tap on each check-box that you wish to sync with your Samsung account.
- 12Tap on the back arrow twice.
- 13Next, tap on "Backup".
- 14From here, you can choose to tap on the slider beside Auto backup and not have to worry when your backup will occur as Auto backup will backup data automatically every 24 hours).
- 15If you don't want Auto backup on, simply tap on the sliders beside email (if you have an email account setup that is not a Gmail), messages and phone.

Backup Contacts Through The Contacts Application
You can make a backup of your contacts by exporting them to your USB storage, SD card, or to the SIM card. To do that, follow these steps:

Backup Multimedia Files On Your Galaxy S5 Using Online Accounts (Facebook, Google And Dropbox)
There are different ways of backing up the music files, pictures and videos on your Samsung Galaxy S5. You can transfer files from your Galaxy S5 to an external storage such as an SD card. You can also sync your Gallery files to an online account so it automatically uploads new files on the phone to that account. To do that:

- 6By default in Settings, your account will automatically sync with your Google Account.
- 7You can also choose to sync your gallery to your Facebook account, to your Dropbox account, to your Samsung Account or even to another Google account.
- 8To do so, tap on the menu button.
- 9Next, tap on "Add Account".
- 10Tap on the account you wish to add.
- 11When setting up sync with your Facebook account, you will be asked to Allow Samsung Galaxy to access your contacts, tap on the allow button.
- 12After signing in, follow any prompts you are asked for.
- 13Once finished, the syncing will complete on its own and you are done backing up your multimedia files to your online accounts.
Use Samsung Smart Switch To Backup Data On Your Galaxy S5
Samsung Smart Switch is a piece of software you should have on your computer when you have any of the versions of Galaxy phones after the Galaxy Note III. It installs the updated drivers for your phone and computer, downloads the latest available Android OS version for your phone, and backs up data from your phone to your computer for future use. To backup data on your Galaxy S5 using Samsung Smart Switch, follow these procedures:

- 2Once at the website, scroll down a bit to find the download button and click on it to save the installation file to your computer.
- 3After you have downloaded the EXE file, click on it to run the installer.
- 4Click on the check-boxes in the screenshot below to proceed with installing Samsung Smart Switch.
- 5After clicking the check boxes, click on the "Next" button and wait for Smart Switch to install.
- 6Once completed, click on the "Finish" button to run Smart Switch.
- 7If this is the first time you've connected your S5, you may have to wait for a min or two for your computer to install the drivers for your phone. Once detected, your phone should be detected by your computer as an external device.Once running, Smart Switch will ask you to connect your phone to your computer via USB cable.
- 8Samsung Smart Switch will continue on once it has connected to your device.

- 10For your backup to start, and "Allow Access" prompt will appear on your device's screen.

How to back up calendar, how to retrieve all data that has already been backed up ("synced")?
I know how to sync (backup) each night but I don't know how to retrieve what has been backed up. Also, I don't see how to back up the calendar- it does not come up as an option to choose in my settings
You need to make sure first that you have actually set your calendar to save the data onto your device and that you include the folder containing that when backing up. There are specific settings that are considered default, and in order to change that, you need to make adjustments.
Retrieving what you've synced depends on where you sync your device. If you are doing that with your computer, you should check which folder you allocated for syncing.

I want to backup my contacts to my computer and print them out?

Check out this app, which allows you to save your phone contacts as a PDF or CSV, which you can then print.
To print your contacts with this app, do the following:
- Install the app to your phone, open it, and press OK.
- Tap "Print"
- Select the storage/messaging service you would like to use to store/send your contacts list.
- If email/Skype, select the address to which you would like to send the file.
- Hit send or save.
- Open the email or drive file, and then open the file containing your contacts.

This same thing happened to my husband last week. His screen was completely black, but I was able to backup everything on his phone using Samsung Kies3. Download the free Samsung Kies3 program on your computer, after it is done installing, turn on your phone and connect your phone charger USB cord to your computer. Samsung Kies3 should automatically detect your phone. If you have never connected your phone to your computer, it may have to install a device driver on your computer, but it should automatically do that on its own when you plug your phone into your computer. Once your device is connected to Samsung Kies3 you will see a backup and restore tab at the top. Click the backup and restore button and choose what you want to backup from your phone and then your photos will be backed up. You will be able to choose the location you want your backup. I recommend backing up to a folder on your computer and after that burn your photos to a DVD or a flash drive, then they are secure if your computer breaks you will have your photos somewhere else. I set a 4-digit pin to unlock my phone and can't open it now?
I was using a fingerprint scan to unlock my phone. That was cumbersome, so I changed it to the pin that I had on my old S3. 5 minutes later I go to use my phone and it tells me I have the incorrect PIN.
If your phone is locked, you can easily reset your pin code by using your Google account. Follow the steps below to reset your password:
- 1Tap on the 'Forgot password?' option.
- 2Enter the Google account email address and password that you were using on your Samsung Galaxy S5.
- 3These steps are unique for each user and they are sometimes different.Follow the steps Google provides to unlock your phone.
- 4When you've successfully finished these steps you can reset your password.
If you forgot your Google account password, follow the steps below:
- 1On your computer, open a web browser.
- 2Go to the Google account recovery page.
- 3Select 'I don't know my password'.
- 4Enter your email address.
- 5Follow the steps from Google to reset your password.
- 6Once the steps are finished, a new page will open where you can enter a new password for your Google account.

I already have my phone set to automatically back up to Gmail and my pictures etc save to an SD card. Is there anything else I would need to do to make sure all my data is saved? I am swapping out my phone today because it is broken.
No, it's not always enough. Setting up a backup to your Google account is useful but won't protect you from everything. This is because a backup using your Google account only contains your contacts and pictures. If you have songs, videos or documents, you'll need to use the Samsung Kies program to back them up on your computer.

- 3Click on the Kies download, under the 'Downloads' section.

Recovering lost data can be very difficult. However, there are many possible ways to get back most of your photos. If you have enabled Google photos auto backup, you can easily recover all of your photos by opening the 'Photos' app on your phone, or by going to your Google account from a computer. If you didn't enable this feature, you can use the EaseUS program, and still recover most of your photos.
Follow the steps below to install and use EaseUS:
- 1On your PC desktop, open a web browser.
- 2Go to the EaseUS website.
- 3Click on the 'Free Download' button.
- 4Once the setup is downloaded, open and install it.
- 5When the installation process is completed, open the program.
- 6Plug your Android phone into the PC.
- 7When the program recognizes your device, it automatically starts to scan your phone.
- 8Once the scanning process is finished, you will see your lost photos.
- 9Select the photos you want to recover and specify where you want to save them on your PC.

Is it safe to remove the USB plug without any click or other action?
Just a suggestion: that another step (after 5) is added to remove the Samsung device from the computer - I was a bit nervous about pulling the USB plug and wondered if I needed to click a button or to close Smart Switch before doing so. Thanks.
Nope, you do not need to worry about having to close Smart Switch or anything else before hand. Simply unplug the USB cable and you are good to go.

Where do I find the file I've exported contacts to?
I'm connected to my PC and have followed the instructions and have exported to /storage/emulated/0/contacts.vcf but I don't know where this is stored? I've followed the article but can't see the exported file. I have tried: I've searched my PC for the file but nothing comes up. I think it was caused by: I don't know where else to look for it. Can you help?
