First, click "Filters" at the top left-hand side of the window

Then, move the cursor to "Edge-Detect"

Now, click "Sobel..." from the menu that appears

A dialogue box will appear with a preview of your image.

You can click and drag the preview or click the scrollbars and arrows to navigate your preview

If you cannot see the preview image, ensure that the "Preview" box inside the dialogue window is checked

You can check and uncheck "Sobel horizontally" and "Sobel vertically"

The "Sobel" filter transforms the image into an outline by using white lines. The difference between the Sobel and Laplace filters is that the Sobel filter keeps the RGB colors as well.

If you are satisfied with your settings, then click "OK"

This will apply the effect to the image. A green bar will appear to show that the changes are being applied.
