You're watching VisiHow. In this tutorial, we're going to show you how you can apply a sketch effect to an image in Adobe Illustrator CS6 in Windows 7.
To begin, we should have Illustrator and document opened. In this video, a photograph has been imported. However, we can use a digital or even scanned image as well.
No matter what you are using, click the "Selection Tool" black arrow. The arrow is at the top-left side of the toolbar.
Then, click the image with which you are working. A blue rectangle will appear. It basically means that your image is selected. When the image is selected, you can start to edit it.
Click "Effect". Find "Photoshop Effects". It is useful to have these effects in both Photoshop and Illustrator, as it saves you time by not making you use two different programs.
Move the cursor to "Sketch". There will be different menu options. The names are self-explanatory. It is recommended to become familiar with them and experiment.
Let's click "Chalk & Charcoal...", for example. You can go through other options as well. A large dialogue box will appear with a preview on the left side will appear.
Click the minus and plus icons in the bottom-left corner to zoom the preview in and zoom it out.
Alternatively, click the arrow to the right of the minus and plus icons.
Click a percentage from the menu.
You can click and drag the preview image to move it.
You can click a "Sketch" effect in this dialogue box as well. The effects are the same as the ones in the "Effects" menu. Depending upon the effect, the changeable settings on the right-hand side will be different.
Let's change "Charcoal Area" and "Chalk Area". These change darker and lighter parts of the image.
You can also change "Stroke Pressure".
Let's click "Graphical Pen".
Let's click "Halftone Pattern". This is useful for creating a screen-printing document.
Let's click "Water Paper".
Let's click "Chalk & Charcoal" again.
Let's click "Conté Crayon".
Let's click "Note Paper".
Let's click "Torn Edges".
Let's click "Charcoal". You may want to manipulate different settings on the right-hand side.
Let's click "Reticulation".
Let's click "Water Paper" again.
For the options, you can click the input boxes and type numbers.
Simply click "OK" to apply your settings. The "OK" button is located in the upper-right corner of the window.
