Move the phone close to a surface and pull the tray out
    .
The reason for that is that the SD card is going to fall out as the tray is being pulled out. If the tray is pulled out while the phone is not right above a surface, the phone might be let go of instinctively in order to catch the falling microSD card. This will end up with the phone being dropped in favor of catching a much cheaper microSD card.
