Will formatting my SD card erase my stored internal phone memory on the Samsung Galaxy S5?

I have installed a new 32GB SD card in my Samsung Galaxy 5S. If I use the formatting instructions in settings/storage/format SD card do I lose all my stored internal phone memory?

Ad

No, you will not lose your stored internal phone memory if you are only formatting the SD card. However, it is always best to back up your data. In your case you could back it up to your other SD card, and then wipe your new card. This is true for all memory card formatting steps. It is also worth pointing out that any time you need to perform a Factory Reset, your SD card should not be formatted, as a Factory Reset just resets the phone's internal memory. We still recommend backing up to be safe.

You will need to use a computer with a card reader. If the card reader has only a SD card input, then you will need a microSD-to-SD card adapter like this one. Insert the card into the adapter. Insert the adapter into the card reader. Copy the needed files to your computer.

It is recommended to check the microSD card for errors first. For example, in Windows, you can open File Explorer by pressing the Windows key and "E" and right-clicking the microSD card device letter. Then, click "Properties". Click the "Tools" tab. Click "Check". You will be able to scan the drive and fix the errors.
