What makes me develop thick dull brown mucus strands in my wind pipe?

I practice singing and would be helped if I got rid of mucus that keeps on developing into thicker and thicker strands of dull brown wick like form popping out during bouts of cough which seem to develop only to throw it out. I do not have cough problem otherwise as a regular feature. I am a sixty-year-old female and only with this problem which escalates every two to three weeks bothers me. I drink ginger tea every day. I am a strict vegetarian and do not smoke or drink. I have a cup or two of coffee with milk but no sugar. Thanks.
