Encrypt Files on Your SD Card Using Your Android Phone

Questions and Answers

What does encrypting do for the SD card?

My cell phone is not using the storage space in the internal memory. A message has popped up suggesting encrypting my SD card.

Encryption isn't going to do much for the space on your card. What it does do is lock your files behind an extra layer of protection. They'll require another password/pin to get to once you've added encryption, meaning they can't be accessed by anyone who gets into your phone or who nicks your SD card.

It's also something of a hassle, though, to encrypt an SD card. You'll need to enter the encryption key any time you want to access the files. You should only encrypt if you actually need the security for sensitive files.
