    To begin, ensure that you have Adobe Illustrator open and a document ready

    For more information, refer to our tutorials on how to create a new document and how to open documents. There are three different objects on the artboard. The blue rectangle in the background, a red circle, and a yellow rectangle.

    Click "Selection Tool"
    .
    The "Selection Tool" icon is a black arrow in the top-left corner of the vertical toolbar. You can also use other selection tools if you have more complicated objects. There are other VisiHow tutorials on how to do that.

    Now, click the yellow rectangle to select it

    A blue frame will appear around the object, indicating that it is ready for editing.

    Next, click "Effect" in the horizontal menu at the top of the window

    Then, move the cursor to "Distort & Transform" in the menu

    Click "Roughen..." in the expanded menu that appears

    A dialogue box will appear.

    You can click and drag the dialogue box to move it away from the artboard

    Then, check the "Preview" box in the bottom-left corner of the window

    You can adjust the first option, "Size"
    .
    This option will adjust the size of the rough edges. You can see that this changes the shape quite dramatically as you move the scroller. To change the size, click and drag the scroller, click somewhere along the scroller line, or type a percentage in the small box on the right side.

    You can also click either "Relative" and "Absolute"

    "Absolute" is more subtle; so, change these settings according to your preference.

    Next, you can alter the "Detail" value using the scroller in the same was as before

    This setting alters how many edges there will be around your shape.

    Finally, you can click either "Corners" or "Smooth" in "Points"

    These settings change sharp corners to rounded edges.

    Once you're happy with your settings, click "OK" to apply the changes
