Use Measure Tool in InDesign CS6

You're watching VisiHow. In this tutorial, we are going to show you how to use "Measure Tool" in Adobe InDesign CS6 in Windows 7.


Steps

    To begin, you should open Adobe InDesign
    .
    You can do that by clicking the Windows icon in the bottom-left corner. This will bring up a list of your recently used programs.

    Click "Adobe InDesign" if it's on the list

    InDesign has a pink-and-purple icon with the letters "ID" on it.

    Alternatively, click the search bar at the bottom of the screen

    Then, type "Adobe InDesign".

    Click "Adobe InDesign CS6" to open it

    You'll be taken to your workspace. You should create a document.

    Click "File" on the bar at the top-left of the window

    Move the cursor to "New" and click "Document..."

    Alternatively, you could click "Open...". This will create a new document. You can also do this with the shortcut "Ctrl" + "N". For more information, refer to our tutorials on how to create a new document and on how to open an existing document.

    Click "OK"

    By default, you will be on the "Selection tool" black arrow.

    You need to click and drag the "Eyedropper Tool"

    It is towards the bottom. In the bottom right-hand corner of "Eyedropper Tool" icon, there is a small black triangle. This is an indication of that if an expandable menu that will appear if you click and drag the icon.

    Select "Measure Tool"

    It looks like a ruler. Alternatively, press "K" on the keyboard.

    Draw a line on the artboard

    You will be able to see the exact measurements and angle as you draw.

    You may use it to find out how long your shape is. "Measure Tool" will give you information on the X and Y axes lengths and other technical information, such as the angle and even the color. The tool is especially helpful for preparing a document to print. Other tools ("Gap Tool" or "Rectangle Tool", where you can enter the dimensions manually) allow you to create documents to specific measurements, but "Measure Tool" is a nice tool to have anyway.
