Car Mode is Only on the S5, and Different than Drive Mode

Many Samsung Galaxy S4 users know Driving Mode, but Car Mode is all Galaxy S5.

With the Samsung Galaxy S5, Drive Mode has been replaced by Car Mode, which is a much more technologically advanced feature. In fact, it can detect when you're in your car, and automatically turn itself on. Using Car Mode, you'll be able to control your S5 when driving, listen to music, and listen to messages - all without ever actually touching your phone. To get started with setting up Car Mode, you'll need to make sure that the car you're connecting it to supports Bluetooth, and that both your Samsung Galaxy S5 and your car have Bluetooth turned on when registering your phone.

Note that at the time of this writing, AT&T has removed the Car Mode functionality from all devices on the AT&T network running their latest Android OS builds. They have replaced it with their own function, called 'Drive Mode', which is not the older Samsung Drive Mode, and does not operate the same way. If you're looking for the Car Mode feature on an AT&T phone, you will need to root your device and install a custom build that supports Car Mode.

How to Register your Vehicle with Car Mode on the S5

Car Mode lets your Galaxy S5 use the car speakers to give you feedback or play music.

After you've registered your phone to a car, you can then hear any feedback from the phone through the car speakers. You can also play music from the phone, through the car speakers. Since you don't want to always set up Car Mode each time you get into the car, it can also be set up to automatically start whenever it's inside of the car. Before you get started, note that you need to turn on the car and turn on the radio before registering your phone. You will also want to make sure you keep your phone in the car while it is registering.

How to Use Car Mode Navigation Features

You can set up navigation features in Car Mode to give you driving instructions.

As with all combinations of technology and driving navigation, make sure you pay attention to where you are. Sometimes 'turn left' might not know about road construction, or be aware of the 'wrong part of town. Pay attention to where you are, and where you're driving. If you need to, lock your doors, and pull off the road in a well-lit and populated area to get your bearings and find new directions.

This can be especially helpful if you're on a business trip, or taking a vacation or road trip, and know your destinations, but are unfamiliar with the area. You can preset driving destinations, and then use them to get where you are going. Just remember to observe traffic signs and posted speed limits, and drive safely.

It plays music, makes calls etc. My only issue is I cannot get any voice program to give feedback in the Bluetooth, it goes to the handset and you can't hear it because the phone isn't against your ear. The Bluetooth I've tried tons of third party apps and none will change this. I've also noticed the same behavior for visual voicemail. I talked to Samsung and they say there is nothing they can do. How can I hear a notification and then accept, have the text read aloud in Car Mode?

For quite some time, S5 did not support this. Try updating the phone and applications and see if it helps. If not, go into your messages and delete all your conversations, it might start to work again, as some cars cannot cope with a large number of messages. If nothing above works, this application might help you: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=a2dp.Vol

Does this Car Mode/Drive Mode enable my Samsung Galaxy 5 to use an auxiliary cable in my 2008 Acura? Or, as I read somewhere Samsung has eliminated this capability in the S5?

I plug in my auxiliary cord and can't hear my podcasts over my car speakers. I plug my auxiliary cord into my Bose radio and the same thing occurs---can hear it via my phone but not the speakers. If I had known this capability didn't exist on this phone I wouldn't have purchased it!!. I have tried: Different auxiliary cords. Different speakers (car and Bose). I think it was caused by: I read somewhere that Samsung eliminated this capability and the only way to work around it is to use a special charger with Bluetooth capability (ibot?)....at a cost of xxx True??

I hate Car Mode, how do I disable it?

I only have 500MB a month so I only use the data once in a while. I get in my car and I can make one call. After that it starts downloading and that is all it does the entire time I am in the car. I have to pull over now every time I want to make a call. Also its hard to exit so when I am trying to find contacts other than the 12 it has chosen for me it takes forever to find them. Also once I have been in my car I have to push my home button a bunch of times to turn it OFF when I am no longer in the car.

Unfortunately, the Car Mode has to stay online as the phone listens to the sounds and contacts its speech-to-text servers (by uploading) so that you can command it to do something anytime. Also, calls usually prevent data transmission, so you should be able to make common carrier calls (non-Internet), but Internet calls will be a problem for you. To exit the application successfully, you need to unpair your device with the car.

How do I get my S5 to read texts through my Bluetooth?

I just switched from a Windows phone to a Galaxy S5. One feature that I miss with my Windows phone was that when it was connected to my car's Bluetooth, it would read my text messages and even tell me driving directions through the Bluetooth. Is it possible to do that with my S5?

Re-register in the car as it is shown in the tutorial. Do not forget to turn on the car and turn on the radio before registering your phone. The Bluetooth for both your phone and car must be on. Keep your phone in the car during the registration. Alternatively, there is a workaround. To disable the sporadic Car Mode, # Tap the "Car Mode" icon from the notifications panel.

The Car Mode will no longer speak to you when you don't want to hear it, and the Car Mode will not automatically come up when you turn on Bluetooth. You can always enable it when you are in your car. Also, try to go into "Menu", "Car Home", "Settings", "Bluetooth Starts Car Home". Deselect all devices and the Car Mode will no longer start automatically when you successfully pair with your Bluetooth. You can try third-party applications if nothing from above works for you.

When I'm driving I get a notification that 'Driving mode is ON' with a spot where I can click 'I'm not driving' every minute or two?

I don't want driving mode to come ON at all, and I can't figure out how to stop it. If I click, 'I'm not driving' it will just send me another notification that driving mode is ON in about 30 seconds.

I have a 2014 Nissan Rogue, cannot access music to my speakers or navigation?

Would the make or model of the car prevent me from using Car Mode

There might be a problem in the Bluetooth connection. Try any, some, or all of these solutions.

The first step for the suggestions below is to delete the phone from the Nissan Rogue audio system, turn the car off, unpair the Nissan Bluetooth connection from the phone, reboot the phone, start the car, and pair the car and the phone.

Turn off automatically synchronization on your car with text messages. Clear all messages from the car and phone, if there are any. When pairing, tap "No" when the phone asks you to transfer your messages to the car, but allow it to transfer your contacts. Do not forget to check the box where the phone asks you whether you should be asked again about that. Additionally, if you are using Verizon Messages+, then stop the Geo Tracking and reset your phone.

It is also possible that Nissan Rogue might be looking for a specific player, like Sound Player, to be set as your default player. Change your music file associations to the specific player. To change the file association for a music file, browse to a music file using your phone's file browser (or install something like X-plore File Manager at [5]. Tap and hold the music file. A window should pop up showing various music players installed on your phone. Tap"OPEN WITH", check "Always Use This Application", and select the application (Sound Player, for example).
