Dry skin is the lack of moisture in the skin. This happens when the skin's outer (stratum corneum) layer loses water. This layer of the skin has a very important role of protecting the inner layers so when it starts losing water, we start experiencing itchiness and flaking. It doesn't only look unattractive but it also makes your skin prone to irritations. While some people experience this only during very cold or very hot weather, there are some who have been suffering from dry skin for a long time and would need long term treatment for it. Dry skin is indeed frustrating, but the good news is you can do something about it.

Causes of dry skin

Before you can treat dry skin, you must first know the possible reason for why it occurs and the possible outcomes of not being able to address it. The following is the list of dry skin's causes.

  1. 1
    Winter weather.
    Ghemgc winer weather.jpg
Since humidity level is low during the winter season, water evaporates faster and the natural moisture on the skin is stripped off by the wind
    .
This results in the skin being flaky and feeling tight. Even people who do not normally have dry skin experience this dilemma during the winter season.

  2. 2
    Heaters.
    Ghemgc heater.jpg
The sudden change of temperature also dries out the skin
    .
We normally experience his when we use heating systems or heaters at home after being exposed in a cold winter weather. Heaters also tend to dehydrate skin since they produce hot dry air.

  3. 3
    Harsh skin products.
    Ghemgc harsh products.jpg
Excessive washing of hands or face can cause the skin's natural oils and lipid to be washed off
    .
There are also some beauty products that have ingredients that could be harmful to the skin. Some of these ingredients are sodium lauryl sulphate, diethanolamine, (DEA) monoethanolamine, (MEA) triethanolamin (TEA) and FD&C color pigment.

  4. 4
    Aging.
    Ghemgc aging.jpg
As we age, natural changes occur on our skin
    .
The epidermis, which is the surface layer of the skin, becomes thin, resulting in the skin being more fragile and unprotected from harmful elements. Our skin also loses its ability to lock in moisture as we age; hence we become more prone to dry skin.

    Medications.
    Ghemgc medications.jpg
There are some medications that may cause dry skin
    .
When you are given a prescription by your doctor, ask him about the side effects so you can use extra moisturizers if your medicines can cause dry skin. Acne medications may also be too strong for your delicate skin, causing it to dry out.

How to prevent dry skin?

  1. 1
    No hot baths.
    Ghemgc hotbath.jpg
While a hot bath feels so relaxing, it strips off the body's natural oil and moisture causing it to feel itchy and tight. Instead of using hot water in your bath, use warm water instead and do not stay under the shower for too long.

  2. 2
    Skip harsh soaps and scrubs.
    Ghemgc soapsandscrub.jpg
These harsh products may smell so nice on the skin, but it may have ingredients that take away the skin's moisture. Body scrubs also take away skin's moisture, making it really dry right after you use it. You can use oatmeal as an alternative, since it is known for its moisturizing power for the skin. If you can't skip soaps, be picky about it and choose the ones that contain milks and moisturizers.

  3. 3
    Pat dry, don't rub.
    Ghemgc towels.jpg
Towels should be used to pat the skin dry and not to rub it. This may cause not only itching and dryness but also irritations to sensitive skin.

  4. 4
    Use moisturizers.
    Ghemgc moisturizer.jpg
This is very important because it plays the role of locking in moisture on your skin. Pick the right moisturizers for your skin. Some of them may be too greasy, so it is recommended that you use them during the evening when going to bed and use the less greasy ones during the day.

When buying any cosmetics or beauty products, check the label and make sure that you avoid products with harsh chemical ingredients in them, such as those that were mentioned above. It is still best to use products that are naturally made to prevent irritations.
